How to modify the TXT files

Post by Peter Stauffenberg »

Happycat and I are playing my mod file and we have also agreed to change the General.txt file so Russia has a rail capacity of 4 and Germany a rail capacity of 3. The Allies still has a rail capacity of 2. I sent him my updated General.txt file and this works very well.

But we were also both concerned about the very harsh oil rules for the Axis in this game so we decided to alter the Units_eng.txt file and made the following changes:
Armor reduced from 3 oil to 3
Fighters reduced from 3 oil to 2
Strat bombers increased from 3 oil to 4

The reason is that Germany runs out of oil in 1942 if he buys any more armor and that's not very realistic. Making the fighters spend less oil makes sense too because their range is lower than the tac bomber and they often just intercept units. The tac bomber still spends 3 oil each time it's used. We also increased the strat bomber from 3 oil to 4 because it has a very long range and probably consumes more oil than any other aircraft. It also makes it less likely Germany will build many strat bombers and bomb Britain into submission.

But the problem is that the game still deducts 3 oil from the Russian and British player each time a fighter or armor moves. Does it mean these values are read at the beginning of the game and can't be altered later? Or do I need to place the file in another location than the default location for it to override the default values. It's strange to me because altering the general.txt worked very well.

How should we alter the units_eng.txt file correctly?

You cannot change the unit values in the middle of a game. I assume that you were playing a game and wanted it changed while playing? The stats of new units you buy reads the numbers from the scrips but the ones you already have on map are not.

That explains it. Happycat bought most of his armor after we changed the file because they consumed too much oil. So that means he sees less oil consumption now, while I don't.

This doesn't matter because we're playtesting my mod before it's released so then we know our next game will have the new values.

I like to think of my armor which consumes 2 oil instead of 3 as being a very "green", ecologically friendly way of crushing my enemy. The Third Reich has signed the Kyoto Accord!
