Another extended line question

HI Guys,

This has probably been covered before, but I looked around the site but couldn't find a direct answer on the question we had in our last game. We understand the concept that an extended line fires as 2 units and if one is lucky enough to concentrate the fire at short range, it can be pretty effective. However we had a situation in which the extended line was at an angle relative to its target such that the 1st half of the line was at close range, and the 2nd half was at medium/skirmishing range, but the target crossed into both beaten zones.

The questions are:

1) As this was a small unit firing, the half in short range gets 4 dice, how many dice does the other half at medium/skrimish range get?
2) We have been playing that the entire extended line fires as one unit with 3 dice at medium/skirmish range (for a small unit), not as two units with 6 dice, correct?

Page 51 Extended line:
Each unit in Extended Line fires at close range as 2 adjacent half units, each with its own centre point (when determining targets). Each half calculates its own number of dice as if it was a complete unit, even if in skirmish order.

Sounds like you would only shoot with the close range half of the extended line, so 4 dice in this case. Since it appears the enemy was in the support zone I guess you would count side support for the shooting.

Page 49 The firing Mechanism
During the Firing Phase close range is mandatory, medium or long range is optional.
The half that is out of close range is not required to shoot so I would count them as supports.

Of course the easiest solution would be to keep your troops facing the enemy so you can get all your shots in on the same range
