Modifiable Rulesets

Post by ryukikass »

Hi forum people, so I've played the game a while now and played others like Panzer Tactics and Advanced Wars (both on Nintendo DS), both really good turn-based strategy games and I quite honestly like the rule sets for those because there's a predictability to what my units are capable of. I realize in real world there is randomness but I kind of expect a turn-based game like this to have your units behave predictably enough to perform the action that you intended your move to be, like in real chess (yes, I'm aware of the chess cheat code). Can I make a recommendation to the developers and allow the next release (Allied Corps, Afrika Corps or a version update) to allow user to enter the rules/behavior for each unit type? For example, I like the idea that any artillery shoots a range of 2 and beyond. In other words, the artillery can not shoot a unit next to it, kind of like what I expect since it's designed for long-range shooting.... Or the fact that I expect planes to see/spot longer distances. Just an idea for the developers. Great game overall!

You can open the equipment.pzdat in the data folder with excel and you get an excel table with columns..you can pretty much amend any and every unit stat to fit your playstyle..shooting range..spotting range..etc...
as well you can set the game to play as chess and you get always the displayed expected combat results unless rugged defense happens
During gameplay press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C to bring up the console and type chess

Thank you for that advice. I began modifying the spreadsheet and noticed in the column for RANGE, there is no unit that has a range from 1-3 or 1-<higher #>. Do you know if by putting in the dash, it will mess with recognizing an attacK?

all values in the equipment file are absolute...anyhing else is ignored resulting the application in either not loading at all, freeze or crash...so you have to decide for one value or the other...

A range greater than 0 is wasted on all classes except artillery. All direct fire attacks are made into adjacent hexes (range = 0). If you want ranged or indirect fire, only artillery (and naval) units can use it. A range of 4 is the same as 1-4 because the (artillery) unit can fire at any visible target within the 4 hex range.

I think what he is saying is he wants a unit to not be able to shoot at the next hex. Whilst this is sometimes represented as the arc of artillery does normally mean a minimum range I think the hex scale of PC kind of negates this as even shooting within the units own hex could concievably be beyond the minimum.

People keep confusing this with a tactical game when it is at a larger scale than that.

OK, a minimum range. No, that's not possible in the current setup and the scale of operations militates against it, as mentioned above.
