Hi Terry
I wonder if you could confirm if the following is correct:
1. Squares cannot receive rear support (the supporting unit can never reach the squares rear - it doesn't have one)
2. Squares can receive flank support from any type of unit that is not wavering. (there is no requirement for you to have a flank in order to receive flank support)
3. Squares can move 1MU as a simple move, counting any face of the square as the front.
4. Infantry in tactical that are charged in the flank or rear by cavalry can form square as a reaction, and then do not count as being charged in the flank or rear (the charging cavalry did not "contact the enemy flank or rear edge") They will not therefore drop a cohesion level for being charged in the rear and will not fight n the +/- POA.
Thanks Terry

Re: Squares - some tricky stuff
Furthermore, can a square provide flank support to a nearby unit?
If yes, how do you define the support areas of the square?
If yes, how do you define the support areas of the square?

Squares never get rear support

The enemy has to be within the support area of the supporting unit, so a square should be able to get flank support, see page 52 for the support area. Basically its 1 base to the side and 2 MU out front.
3. Squares can move 1MU as a simple move, counting any face of the square as the front.
Correct

IF they fail the CMT they still form square but drop a cohesion level, also if the cav started 2 MU or less charge distance, they will automatically drop another cohesion level. Let the cav start too close and you could lose 2 cohesion levels.
Thanks Terry

Re: Squares - some tricky stuff
I don't think that a square has a support area so I do not think it can provide flank support.pptheos wrote:Furthermore, can a square provide flank support to a nearby unit?

Re: Squares - some tricky stuff
Since a square doesn't have a flank edge it does not have a support area - so Yes, the above statement is correct.I don't think that a square has a support area so I do not think it can provide flank support.
Re: Squares - some tricky stuff
Could you kindly provide the page reference for that 2 MU ? I can't locate it.deadtorius wrote:BrettPT wrote:IF they fail the CMT they still form square but drop a cohesion level, also if the cav started 2 MU or less charge distance, they will automatically drop another cohesion level. EDIT: Terry pointed to the Note in the Responding to Assault Table on p69 for the entry.
