First Rapid Fire Scenario

Post by acarhj »

Rapid being the operative word. :D

This is the introductory scenario I made using the Rapid Fire Miniatures game scenario book "Scenarios for North West Europe". It took a while to get the thing working the way I wanted but it was my first scenario where I did any sort of scripting. My main problem was getting the PlaceUnit function to work. It took me 3 hours before I realised I missed the include Functions.BSF statement at the top of the script! After that, things went more smoothly. BTW, I play on Ubuntu using WINE and the game, at least in single player mode works fine.

Anyway, let me know how the game plays.

I tried a few times to get it to work in ubuntu and wine. I have 12.04 LTS beta installed with 1.4 stable wine. What versions are you using and did you do any winetricks?

I am using 11.04 right now. I did have problems getting it to run. I ended up installing WINE 1.4 and I installed BA with a regular installer. (uninstall software) Make sure you have updated your video driver. Match the resolution in game to the desktop resolution. I don't think I have any other special settings. Also, I am using ATI HD6000(?) series video card with gobos of memory (1 Gig I think). I wish I had gone NVIDIA if only because it seems to run more windows progs.

Thanks, I'll give it a try over the weekend.

I have an ATI 5670 1g and haven't had any problems in windows XP or ubuntu with games/graphics. I have used both brands over the years and prefer ATI but not set in stone. I also prefer AMD CPUs and now that they own ATI, I felt the urge to build with the same company parts.

I'll give your scenario a go in windows too.

I've just read on the Ubuntu forums that the NVIDIA cards are better supported in Linux and utilize the GPU much more in LINUX than ATI. However, I have not had many problems with my ATI card either. In fact, I left NVIDIA for ATI simply because I got burned on a badly designed 6200. No money back. A simple "Sorry. Nothing we can do about it."

I use VMWARE player for Windows XP. I have not tried too many games with it yet. Mainly Field of Glory. I also have to use it to print graphics. My printer (a MagiColor 2400) is windows only and the driver that is available does not color match correctly or well. So, windows printing for graphics it is!

Played your battle. Only took a few minutes to play through. It could use a briefing or popup that states that the player is defending. I assumed from the sandbag positions that I should sit and wait for the enemy but it would be better to remove doubt. Wasn't very difficult to win for me.

The critical part is "winning" the first 6 turns. You pretty much are breaking the enemy by the time reinforcements show up. The scenario, like I said, is a small introductory scenario from the Rapid Fire scenario book. Others will be closer to full scale. My next one, after adding the finishing touches to this scenario, will be Arracourt. It will be, as you might guess, a "heavy metal" scenario.

I think it's fine to ramp the difficulty up. Perhaps add something to the briefing to hint that that is the case?

Cheers

If you are putting together a string of battles into a campaign, I suggest that you add a description to the main window, and at least a text briefing. I realize that you are just starting out with designing and you may have already planned on it.

In my experience with other computer games, sometimes board game scenarios don't transfer over very well. Don't let that stop you, just modify things to make a fun battle out of it.

I installed 1.3 with Playonlinux using wine 1.4. I had to uncheck fullscreen. When I get into the game, there is no text. I can move the mouse pointer and find the area to click to start a campaign. The list is blank. I pick the first one and get the tutorial. All the text to play the battle is there. I think I must need a special font.

So it is functional and working in Linux now? If so, FANTASTIC!

I put in the info to add it to the wine appdb but it needs approval from the site.

I got an email rejection because I used a 3rd party app, POL. Try again with just wine. I don't know if I can.

Played it, very enjoyable, even after loosing my 57mm in turn 2. But it did remove one Panther before it died. Was about done when the reinforcements arrived to save my bacon!

GREAT JOB!

Sorry for the hiatus. I was playing this thing called "Operation Sealion" so I was a bit busy. England is safe from the Nazi Menace. Thanks Morge4! I need to do a few cosmetic things to the scenario and then on to Arracourt.

@junk2drive: For whatever reason, the WINE development community seems to really despise POL. Not really sure why.
