Maintaining momentum

Post by rogerg »

I really enjoyed Britcon. I want to continue to play FoG rather than other rule sets. However, February is a long time to wait. There are only two of us at the club playing regularly, and a couple of other beta testers who play occasionally. There are probably at least four more who would play. With half a dozen players we would see more armies, and have the larger mix of opponents that has made DBM the standard game for years.

Is there any possibility of opening up the system to give people 'associate tester' status? These players would be 'sponsored' by an existing beta tester. They would still be signing the NDA, but would not get access to the beta testers' site. Their feedback would be via the existing tester who sponsored them.

If this widening of the distribution prior to publication is seen as too risky, perhaps it migth be combined with a pre-order system.

Maybe it is just at Halifax, but the DBM activity is slowing down and other games are appearing on Wednesday evenings. Britcon was a big success for the rules. It would be a shame to lose momentum prior to publication because we have too small a player base.

This is a good point. Stephen Finn knows several young wargamers (GW) who he thinks would love the chance to grow into a more mature rules set. He had thought he would use DBMM but having looked at it he thinks it might put them off the hobby. The late release means we get great production values but means holding back enthusiam for spreading it throughout the clubs for months to come. There are about 8 or so older wargamers in the High Wycombe area that have gone off DBM and could easily be brought back into the fold when FoG is released. Maybe some sort of associate tester mechanism would allow us to bring forward plans for demonstration games and then regular club night meets sa well.

My understanding is that it is OK to play FoG with people who have not signed an NDA but that such people cannot take a copy of the rules away.

I would want to be sure with JD but would that be enough to get people playing?

I initially thought so. But I suspect other people's reaction to playing a game might be the same as mine - they want to read through the rules and see how it all works. I think timing getting people involved so that the initial rush of enthusiasm can be combined with tangible follow=up will be important.

I doubt anything can be done, but if anyone has some bright ideas then please speak up.

My understanding is that the limitation in adding people to the beta program is primarily in producing the rulebook.
Would it be possible to have "assoicate testers" who have signed a NDA, have access to the forum, but who aren't provided with a copy of the rules? If so would it be possible for these associate testers to borrow their "sponsor's" copy of the rules - with the sponsor still being accountable for the copy?

And Spain the week before and Warfare at the minimum.

If there is interest in a comp in Manchester I can organise the use of the MAWS club room which will hold 15 tables.

Let me know.

Another option would be for those of us "up north" to arrange to meet at one of the clubs that meets on a weekend.

The Mailed Fist have a meeting in Hyde on the 2nd and 4th Sunday and MAWS meet on the 1st, 3rd and 5th in Walkden.

I can easily make the Mailed Fists if anyone wants a game but I will need to arrange a pass out to play at MAWS on Sundays.

Is there any way we can persuade Warfare to run something?

I may try and get to one of the Manchester clubs for a couple of Sundays. Bit of a trek but might be worth it. Won't be until sometime in September though.

Another point is that as I am currently not working I am available for games during the day.

I would like to come over and play, but can't afford the air fair at the moment.

May the best dice win

Top offer from the French Jester! Unfortunately the missus would hang draw and quarter me if I went to Paris without her...

And she can't go....

I still haven't told her about Dublin in November yet (and I have already entered the comp, paid the air fare and booked the hotel)

The MAWS club meets on the first Sunday of each month. you would probably have to become a member of the club (costs 10 quid I think), but meetings on Sunday are free (i.e. no subs).

You should be able to find an opponent and I will turn up with the keys to open the place if needs be.

I believe we currently have 11 or 12 players who have signed an NDA and play the game so you should be able to find an opponent - ask either myself or Hammy to post something on the MAWS list (or even join it yourselves) and we will respond with a willing opponent.

Well we can try something in November at Fall-in you can all hop across the Atlantic and take advantage of the American Lira. Everything is half price to the pound. Even Scots can find a bargain at those prices. :)

JD says they have asked if they can hold FoG, and he has agreed. I am not sure who to contact to seek confirmation. I will certainly enter if it exists.

I have e-mailed Tim Child to check.
