Limber Bases

Post by shadowdragon »

The suggestion in the rule book for a limber base is 40mm wide by 90mm deep for a small artillery unit and 120mm deep for a large artillery unit. I presume that's for 15mm which is the scale I'm using. Converting a small artillery limber base to a large one is fairly simple....add a separate 2 horse base that's 40mm wide by 30mm deep.

However.....

I have two options for a 90mm base which are (1) a full 4 horse team limber with maybe enough space - maybe - on which to put a gun model behind the limber or (2) a limber with just 2 horses and plenty of space to put one of the deployed artillery bases.

The first option is probably the most aesthetically pleasing but it means purchasing a bunch of separate gun models (in my foolishness I've decided to glue my gun models to the artillery crew bases - foolish but I'm "sticking " :) to that decision as I'm tired of the unglued gun models flopping around) and more limbers just for the extra pairs of horses (I have many 4 horse team limbers and few 6 horse team limbers)

The second option is...the opposite...less aesthetically pleasing but a whole lot more practical.

So I'm just putting this out there for thoughts - recognizing that everyone's going to have their own preference.

For other Napoleonic systems, I used the simple method of placing the artillery base behind the limber base when the guns were limbered up - not pleasing to the eye, but it worked.

For my FOG-N artillery units, I've recently purchased a number of extra guns off Ebay to place onto my limber bases. This way I don't have to a) fiddle with any guns being moved from the artillery base to a limber base and any risk damage, and b) its more pleasing to look at than the method I used in the past.

Yeah, I might go with the "more pleasing" look and not having to fiddle with guns. I have way more limbers than I need for FoG (i.e., just one limber per battery of 2-3 bases and none for attached artillery). So it shouldn't be too big a job to meet requirements.
