Close Assault

Post by mroyer »

In all my, admittedly short, time playing BA I have yet to see a close assault (moving an adjacent infantry unit into a tile occupied by the other side) fail - regardless of the odds. Is a close assault an automatic (or very high chance of) victory by game design? ...or, have I just been exceedingly lucky when close assaulting?

You sir have been very lucky. Keep playing and use close assault every time and you'll quickly see the odds go against you. I have found that if the unit you are attacking has a low morale, the odds are in your favor that the close assault will succeed. Makes sense. However,...I have assaulted suppressed units only to find my infantry repelled in a humiliating way.

I was starting to wonder... it just didn't feel right that I should ALWAYS win a nasty, hand-to-hand close-assault.
Maybe it's because I suppress the heck out of the target before going in? Could I be lowering it's morale or firepower unwittingly by doing that?

If you suppress the target a lot, then you would generally expect to be winning. Just don't blame the forums if fate now rewards your post with a string of improbable assault losses ;).

My Close Assaults average about 50-50. But like has been said, if you make the attempt at say 60 something percent, your chances are logically not as good as 90 something percent.

Ya rolls the die and you takes your chances. It depends on whether taking the chance was worth the risk.

Yeah... I had my first one repelled last night. And, I must have "rolled" really poorly as I had a full squad of German engineers going in against a battered, suppressed, French infantry squad.
