Figures per Base

I note that unlike the other two sets of rules (FoG:A & FoG:R) you folks did not put in diagrams on how many figures go on a base. I read all the way through the rules and frankly never did find much on how many figures go on a base. Just one comment about the infantry.

So what I saw was 4 figures on an infantry base, 3 figures on a cavalry base and 1 figure on an artillery base.

I am reading comments about 3 figures on an infantry base too.

So why no illustrations? There is a comment early on in the rules to check the Reference Section but that goes more into the formations used rather than how to base particular unit types.

Realizing that folks are going to use their miniatures as is (esp. in clubs or small informal groups) I figure (pun) that you folks were more or less trying to stay "non-standard" but in the next printing if you could have some sort of diagram on this it would surely help. New folks to the hobby that buy your rules I would think would be terribly confused. I know I was.

I don't think it particularly matters as far as how many figures per base, except you need to be able to differentiate between light/skirmish bases and line bases. You could do this by having 3 figs and 4 figs per line (6 figs or 8 figs on a game base with two ranks) or by positioning 3 figs differently. (Someone here posted pics showing their light/skirmish bases with 3 jumbled on the base but line bases with 3 neatly lined up.)

I just painted my first ever Napoleonic infantry base (cheers from around the globe welcomed ) with 8 figures on one 60mm x 45mm base and they do look impressive that way! But...oiiii...that means an extra 8 figures to a small 4-base unit and 12 extra figures for a large 6-base unit!!!

But I do think I will go with that impressive look. Skirmish/Light bases I'll try 6 figures and that should look just as good.

If you look at all the diagrams across the book you will see how many figures to a base we are assuming and on page 7/8 we also say how many. Also see page 112 .

Found it - once I saw the note about the Ref. Section I skipped over to there and missed the next section of text. Add in a picture there. It would help.

Just out of curiosity does it matter if the attached base is in front or the rear of the unit? If you become winded or break you lose the attachment and replace the base or not not if winded correct?

Wait till you see how I show the attachments!!! I think I will try skirmishers on narrow bases (15mm deep maybe) to be placed in front of the unit. Should look cool. Prob will be trying to do artillery the same way. Maybe the small Rafm guns. Will have to see!!
