In an effort to learn the rules, my four BG's of Gallic Foot hit four BG's of Italian Foot with 5 hits to 1 against the Gallic Foot during the Impact Phase. The Cohesion Test for the IF produced 8. My question concerns the correct calculation of the modifiers against the Cohesion test. I count four modifiers: 1 HP3B, at least two more hits..., commander with BG, lost impact phase against impact foot. I calc 8 - 3 +1 = 6 and the Italian Foot drops to DISR. Am I correct or did I go wrong somewhere?
This is my first experience with FoG so any helpful advice will be appreciated.

Re: Modifier calculation
That looks fine to me MS.
Now rear support would have got you that magic extra +1 to hit 7 and not drop a level!

Re: Modifier calculation
And of course it's one Cohesion test per BG which lost in the impact phase - not one test for all 4 BGs
(or did you mean one BG made up of 4 bases)?

Re: Modifier calculation
This is important because it sounds like you had 4 BGs vs 4 BGs and all 4 BGs combined for 5 hits. When considering if a BG won or lost, you only look at the number of casualties that BG gave vs how many it received. You calculate each BG separately.not one test for all 4 BGs
Re: Modifier calculation
Yes my description was confusing. I rolled 8 dice to determine hits because there were 4 bases in contact and they were 2 deep, which I assumed made 4 BG's and I'm guessing was an error. The 4x2 bases all joined together should have been referenced as a single BG...right!?
Re: Modifier calculation
Right - two battlegroups of 8 stands each, two deep.
so 4 stands v 4 in contact - 8 dice each.
Looks like your calculation is correct - the Italian foot drop 1 level.

A Battle group is a single "unit" made from 2 to 12 bases.blucosmon wrote:Yes my description was confusing. In impact only bases in contact with enemy get dice and each gets 2 dice*. Both sides fight with the same nuber of bases.
So if each side had 4 bases in contact each would roll 8 dice. If each side had 2 bases in contact each would roll 4 dice.
Added Info.
If one player had three bases in contact and the other player 4 then each side would only fight with three bases, 6 dice, but the player with 4 bases would decide which three of his fought.
*Once you find the total dice to roll then adjust for other things such as being light troops against battle troops, disorder, disruption, fragmentation.
In melee most troop types roll 1 dice for each base in contact and one for each base in a second rank directly behind the ones in contact. Knights, chariots, arty, (BWg) get 2 for each front rank and no rear rank,
