French Army List - Swiss Infantry

Post by Old_Warrior »

Just got my rules book. Noted on page 124 that the Swiss are either:

Superior - Drilled
OR
Average - Veteran

sounds kind of odd to me.

Shouldn't it be:

Superior - Veteran
OR
Average - Drilled

Superior veteran is just too strong and becomes what I call the " halo effect" making anyone who was highly regarded the best they can be in elan and in training . Not all Guards are superior veteran in our lists . You dilute the value of such rich classifications if you do it too often and you would make some armies very expensive in points terms. By having the option you can give them better elan or better training. We also do this in quite a number of cases because we do not want to be too dogmatic when classifying troops whose peformance was better than average drilled but still not at the very top of the tree.

Well guys then it should have been:

Average - Drilled
OR
Average - Veteran

The Swiss not being known for high elan anyway. But they were Veteran for the most part. I would go with the latter 2/3 of the time and 1/3 if the regiments were newly raised.

In Spain ( Empereors and Eagles) in one of the lists where they appear we have them as "average veteran" so we are fairly close to your view. Of course there is nothing stopping anyone fielding any French army etrange regiment ( ie not allied) as French in a given list matching one of the elan/training options for the French eg as Average Drilled - unless we have separately identifed them in that list.

Well and really the players can rate the units as they like. The lists are only a guideline.
