Roll Call 16th/17th June 2012 - Last charge of the Gendarmes
I need to finalise the theme for Roll Call this year. My preference is to have an early period, similar to Godendag and Badcon, but with the refinement of a slightly earlier end date in order to exclude Pistol armed Cuirassiers as well as musket armed foot. I need to to a final check, but I think this would give an end date for the period of 1574.
If anyone has any thoughts/feedback/suggestions before this gets confirmed, please let me know.
If you'd want to play, but don't have a suitable army I may also be able to help out.
Cheers,
Kevin

Re: Roll Call 16th/17th June 2012 - Last charge of the Genda
Hi Kevin,
Firstly thanks for running FOGR at the Challenge - great job.
I think Challenge proved two things:-
1. Alasdair always wins
.
2. In an open period everyone else vying for runner-up takes something either from Duty and Glory or Wars of Religion!!!
With Britcon being Open, I think a theme is definitely needed. Usk and Burton with pre-1592 (no musket BG's) had real variety and threw up some really different amy choices, although Superior heavy armoured Pis/Pis armed horse were quite dominant. Going earlier than 1570 to exclude these is a great idea as this opens even more the viability of Gendarmes and some of the Eastern armies with Cavalry bow/swordsman who just die in droves to Pis/Pis horse.
On first pass, I fully support the proposal. I too will look through the books to see if there is anything odd, but bring on the Kiels, Tercio's, Gendarmes, Scots Schiltrons (for Dave A!) and nellies!!
I will be there!
Don

Same as Don
pre 1570ish would be brilliant and would tempt me away from going over to the dark side (napoleonics) for Rollcall, quite tempted by the idea of Arabs of some sort, we'll see, but the temptation to put nellies on the table might be to strong, as to Dave Allen with Scots surely its time for the Iroquois to appear, I will be there, can't wait.
cheers

How about pre-1575 but no troops with impact pistol permitted? This would account for the Early Danish anomaly of Mounted reiters with impact pistol from 1524.

The Early Danish can have Kurassiere from 1570 - so you need to go earlier than this.
Or go with Richard's suggestion and just ban any battle troops with musket or impact pistols.

Good spot by Richard. Keeping it simple would be as Pete suggested I.e
"Any army pre 1570 - no musket BG's or impact pistols"
Simples!

Thanks to everyone for the constructive input.
The Danish anomaly probably wouldn't be too unbalancing as they are Average (and there doesn't seem to be a lot to recommend that army once you've removed the 6 BG of superior cuirassiers), but for consistency I think the period should be defined as:
1) Any army from any officially published list dated before 1570
2) No Battle Troops with Musket, Musket* or Salvo capability
3) No mounted troops with Impact Pistol capability
Unless anyone can spot any glaring holes in that in the next few days i think it's what I'll go with.
Cheers,
Kevin

Looks good to me Kevin.
By applying the restriction just to Battle Troops it still allows the odd list such as Ottomans to bring their musket armed shapshooters which I can't imagine will imbalance things that much.

Sounds good to me

The the website said Western Europe...petedalby wrote:Ottomans
I take it the theme will now just be pre 1574, no Battle Troops with Musket or Impact Pistol, otherwise any army.
Hmmph, mutter, cough 'Tatars', splutter.

Somthing seems to have been lost in translation...the BHGS website has:
15mm, 800pts, “Western Europe”. Any army from “Wars of Religion” and “Trade and Treachery”.
no mention of any date or other restrictions?

Re: Roll Call 16th/17th June 2012 - Last charge of the Genda
I can see how this confusion has arisen. The BHGS website currently has "15mm - 800pts - TBC". Until recently it mentioned Western Europe and T&T and WoR. That was last year's theme, based on those being the books available when the theme was decided.
This is part of the TBC process. Based on feedback received so far an early period without geographical restraint seems a popular choice. I think it makes a number of the armies that aren't viable against the later hi-tech ones playable.

This sounds a great theme - are the teams spread across periods again ?

I can't say for certain as I'm only involved in the Fog R side. The website says yes, but that part is still referring to 2011.

mmm - Alasdair - you've picked 2 of my possibilities with Moghul being favourite so far (the other being Omani!) - Moghul allows you to have Nellies, Cav Bw Sword as well as lt lance, sword (all superior) and lots and lots of artillery which Omani doesn't. Only one problem - I haven't practised with it at all and I am not noted as a good shooty cav general!!
Oh well - it will at least look pretty and I'll have some fun at the foot of the table!!

Early Ottomans are also on the list but I am told they're a bit last year

Two Cavalry armies?
Looks like I'm going to need a radical new direction.
In that case I bags Early Russians - like Tatars, but no dodgy Dragoons and some anti-Elephant Artillery firmly ensconced behind Gulay Gorod.

What about armies post 1570 that don't have musket or impact pistol?
