In our last game we both ended up losing artillery to shooting, the turn after the supports had routed off, and the guns were the only targets left. Now both of us would have rather captured said guns, but according to the rules you have to shoot at any targets in range and arc. In this case could it be an exception or is it just bad luck to have your soon to be new guns roll the dreaded 1 at the wrong time instead of being left alive long enough to get captured.
One other question, if your only enemy in arc and in range is broken routers do you still shoot at them? Blathergut seemed to think yes as they were the only target about, no civility in the Protestant armies at all is there?
must you shoot?

See Page 116. "no shooting or close combat is calculated against routers" (In bold in the rules).
You may have to shoot at them, but you don't actually work anything out, even if there might be a chance of inflicting a Death Roll.

Re: must you shoot?
I had a nagging feeling that shooting routers did not seem right.
Oh well guess if your boys are angry at those arty dudes then you better hope you roll poorly or your opponent makes a high death roll so you can stroll up and catch it. In our last game if I had not killed it the captured guns would have been right on a nice enfilade for me
unfortunately my marksman got the range and blew the battery up or something like that
