Re: Skirmisher bases
I've tried some (old minifigs) at 4 per base which were okay but I prefer 3 per base. With the larger Eureka / AB figures I'd never go with 4 per base.
BTW nice photos / figures / bases.

Re: Skirmisher bases
Thanks for that mate, I like the 6 figures per base over the 8 figures per the rule book.
Spanish allies for my Anglo-Portuguese army which I have just rebased and also rebased the Spanish army as well.
On sunday Dave53 and I will be playing the Quick start Rules down at the wargames Club

Yes and looking forward to it, first game of Napoleonic's for me for longer than i care to remember .
Also will be using 6 figures to a base like colin but I am Scottish after all.
Colins Spainish army looks great may just be using it at Britcon this year, have a soft spot for Spainish was my first ever Wargames army.
Been reading the rules will be good to see how it works and if certain armies ie Spainish are viable in a points based way.

Re: Skirmisher bases
I've just recently re-did all of my War of the Spanish Succession figures for FoG R. At that time I went through a lot of comparisons of 6 or 8 infantry per base (actually 3 or 4 musketeers for the WSS). While I eventually went with 3 figures per FoGR musketeer base (or 6 figures in two ranks), I decided I'd mostly be going with 8 figures per base for FoGN. At least one factor was because I had a lot of 16 figure battalions (32 figure regiments) so it made sense. One nation that it might make sense to do 6 figures are my Spanish since they are in battalions of 12 (36 per regiment). I'll have to consider since they are old minifigs and don't fill out a base as nicely as say AB figures.CLAVDIVS wrote:Thanks for that mate, I like the 6 figures per base over the 8 figures per the rule book.

Re: Skirmisher bases
Regretfully my first FoG game won't be until after Easter because I'm away the week before Easter, I've not finished rebasing the French and the table is set up for an ACW Johnny Reb III game that I haven't actually played due to all the French units cluttering the table as I madly re-base.david53 wrote:Yes and looking forward to it, first game of Napoleonic's for me for longer than i care to remember .

Re: Skirmisher bases
They look fine as men in open-order but close-order troops would be touching elbows. I can understand the reasons of economy or to allow the paint job to be seen but troops at this sort of spacing look nothing like a close-order formation. It's an aesthetic that has gained acceptance - leaking over from Ancients, perhaps - so ....CLAVDIVS wrote:Thanks for that mate, I like the 6 figures per base over the 8 figures per the rule book.

Re: Skirmisher bases
Its all a personnal thing, 6 is fine according to the rules and people will decide for themselves, as you say it might not look right but it is only either 8 or 6 metel figures and not say 600 men advancing to you.

Let's face it, we're representing thousands of troops with a handful of figures. I can't really understand why people get too concerned about how many are on a base, or how close together they are.

Re: Skirmisher bases
Because properly ordered, a notional regiment will look something like a real platoon. They'll still be little toy soldiers though.Wiltshiresaint wrote:Let's face it, we're representing thousands of troops with a handful of figures. Re: Skirmisher bases
A regiment will look like a Platoon, not sure were your going with that.
IMO there are too few people around at present playing FOG N to worry if they have 6 or 8 figures on a base.
If the rules writers say they are fine with it which they do in the book whats the problem.
Its a personnel thing both ways.

Re: Skirmisher bases
I have been basing 8 per base in 28mm, to me it looks a little better than 6. Some of the command bases only have 6 with standards, officers waving swords and pesky drums getting in the way. When it comes down to it it is the base size that matters, one could field an army of mdf bases with the troop type scribbled on in a wax crayon, but then it might not look so attractive!

Obviously. I jut find it interesting that some wargamers take pains and pride in producing units in accurate uniform and then mount them in a way that looks more Hollywood than period battle painting.david53 wrote: If the rules writers say they are fine with it which they do in the book whats the problem.

The platoon/regiment point is that your units can look like military formations.
