Minefields

Post by Zhivago »

Just a suggestion...I just got done playing the Prohkarova scenario. One thing that is missing from the Kursk scenarios are minefields. These played a huge part in the defensive battle at Kursk. I know that Panzer Corps (and even Panzer General) were never programmed to include minefields, I think that this would add an important element of realism to the game. It would be great if the pioneer unit's role could be expanded to include these tasks somehow.

It was discussed for 1943, Minefields and anti-tank ditches to be exact, but it was felt that such items wouldn't quite fit on this scale.

Maybe in the future, in a proper expansion where extra code and art assets will be available, but for the meantime the DLC will be built on existing assets.

An interim step, which I employed in the Bluecoat scenario, is to set the underlying terrain to swamp, even if the overlay is clear or whatever. Add a string 'Mines' to let the player know. They don't cause any damage but they slow units down and channels them as well as making them more vulnerable like minefields do.

It would be cool if the minefield had its own strength points, say 20 or 30 or something, and in order to get through it, attacking forces would have to use artillery or aerial bombardment, or a pioneer unit (which could maybe eliminate 10 strength points of the minefield per turn), to blow through it. Of course, one could also do what the Soviets did during WW2 and use "penal battalions" who were forced at gunpoint to run through minefields to clear them.

They could be given the submarine characteristic - that would make them hard to get rid of.

Why not, on the sea it is great if only the destroyers or mineboat can destroy it, on the land it should be same, that inf should have bonus espec. pioniers or bridgers, right?

I would say that artillery would be one way, but another way would be to give pionere units the ability to clear them (and also lay them) over the course of 2-3 turns. I guess you could also do a suicide approach and have infantry or armor drive into the minefield. The Russians sometimes used "penal battalions" in WW2 to clear minefields, where soldiers were driven at gunpoint out across a suspected minefield. Minefields were a huge factor in many east-front battles, especially Kursk. It would be nice to see them incorporated someway in a future incarnation of Panzer Corps.

Or the bombers, can destroy that, but the soldiers should have a bonus to destroy, and lay a mines?:) Its great idea, but I think it should be more complicated.
