How many figures?
Hi,
I've pre-ordered my set of rules and now I'm wanting to get a start on painting my figures. I know that it's 8 figures to a bases & 4 bases to a unit but I've no idea how many units I'll need. So a few questions:
1. What will be the standard points value for an army?
2. Roughly how many units (Foot, art, cav) will I need to field? (I realise this will differ from country to country)
3. What lists if any will be in the main rule book. ( I'm thinking of doing late period Austrian or Waterloo Prussians)
Thanks,
Ferb

Re: How many figures?
Hi Ferb
We have been playing 800 points, under which most armies seem to come at 12-16 units. The extremes I have seen are my French Guard Corps which tends to be around 8 units, while Andy's Neapolitan 'horde of crap' army usually comes in at 20+ units
800 points usually gives us a result in 3-4 hours including setup.
My latest 1809 Austrian list is:
8 Infantry units (4 large, 4 small)
4 cavalry units (all small)
1 artillery unit (large)
This comes in at 40 bases of infantry, 16 of cavalry and 3 guns.
There are a few extra sundry bases for attachments, some additional Light Infantry bases in skirmish order, Generals, a large line-of-communication marker (I have made a HQ/staff diarama for this) and a single limber base.
My figures are all 18mm, so I use 6 to an infantry base - which is a big saving in painting time!
I haven't seen a Prussian list but would imagine that there will be quite a bit of flexibility in size - depending on how much you load up on landwehr (and whether they are Silesians).
You might want to be a little careful if buying new figures for an army, before the lists are published. If you go for the usual wargamers 'a unit of Cuirassiers, plus one of Guard, plus some line infantry and cavalry' you may discover for some armies that the elite stuff can only be fielded in a Corps that contained such regiments. I would advise using historical order of battle for a Corps as a basis, or start with the rank and file units and wait until mid-year when the lists are published before buying too many glamour units.
Cheers

Re: How many figures?
Thanks for the informative reply, it's been really helpful.
Re: How many figures?
Neopolitans! I've heard that when the heats on they just melt away.
Re: How many figures?
So to convert this into figures; My latest 1809 Austrian list is:
8 Infantry units (4 large, 4 small)
4 cavalry units (all small)
1 artillery unit (large)
This comes in at 40 bases of infantry, 16 of cavalry and 3 guns.
40*8 = 320 foot,
16 * 3 = 48 cav
3 * 2 = 6 art.
Which makes them approx twice the size of an ancients army. Better start saving my pennies.
Re: How many figures?
Go 10mm figures on the 15mm size bases and save yourself a fortune! Pendraken are 30 figures for £3.50. So rough cost for the army would be £60. Thats what I'm doing

Re: How many figures?
I use 6 (18mm) figures to a base, so it's actually 240 infantry - most of us in our playtest group do this and it looks fine.So to convert this into figures;
40*8 = 320 foot,
16 * 3 = 48 cav
3 * 2 = 6 art.
Cheers

Re: How many figures?
I reckon I can get an army together, based on what I've seen here.
Thanks to all for that. May have to make a combined Austro-Russian force, as happened in 1813.
Could anyone say how many skirmisher bases per unit, are required?
My Grenz unit, for example - would I need to make one skirmish base or two?

Re: How many figures?
From other responses by Terry, you don't actually require skirmisher bases for line infantry units that have organic skirmishers. Although you might want some skirmisher markers. In the case of light infantry, it's supposed to be 2 formed bases of 6-8 figures each and 2 skirmisher bases of 3-4 figures plus 2 additional skirmisher bases to replace the formed bases if the light infantry is deployed completely as skirmishers. Not having the rule book I can't say if Grenzers are definitely "light infantry" but I'd assume so. But with only days before getting a copy - if you don't have one already - why not just wait and see?Albion1 wrote:I reckon I can get an army together, based on what I've seen here.

Ah, you don't know about Amazon then?
Could be weeks!
Re: How many figures?
Hi
Could you please tell me if the base size is still 40*30mm for 15mm figs; is there alternatives or just one basing?
Thanking you in advance

40mmx30mm is base base size for most troops types: Infantry, Cavalry, skirmishers, Medium artillery.Could you please tell me if the base size is still 40*30mm for 15mm figs; is there alternatives or just one basing?

40mmx40mm for commanders and Heacy artilery.
Small units are 4 bases (2x2) and large units are 6 bases (3x2).
We allow for the use of 30mmx30mm bases by using 6 basesof this size for a small unit and 8 bases in a large unit.
Re: How many figures?
I understand that I must read more carrefully the rules. Sorry for the mistake
Re: How many figures?
Doesn't seem like 3-4 hours is conducive to tourney play - I expect if that's the case we'll be seeing 5-600 point armies
Re: How many figures?
OK thanks a lot Terry; I haven't received my rules book yet from amazon. Seems to be a bad choice!...
Best regards
