Dragoons or Light Foot
Which would you choose and why ?
I have the option of using either but have not played enough to find the subtle differences.
Thanks

LF
The Later TYW German option sees them as superior plus they can easily move/rout back through your BGs.
Dragoons need a lot of space!
But then, enemy artillery can fire over the LF.

I would say you pay your money and take your choice. Dragoons are more expensive, but have a better chance of damaging the enemy. They are faster and so can be concentrated where you need them more easily. LF are cheaper, less effective in firing and slower. However, they dont need a gap to run away through. I think LF are better if you want them to pin and delay stuff, dragoons if you want to hand out some damage at the same time.

I'm with Mr Boots. It really does depend on what's in the rest of your army, but also the numbers that you have available. A single 3 base Dragoon unit is very fragile, although 2 working together can be effective. Don't forget that Dragoons can make a 3rd move, so they can be really good at pinning people back.

I find both very useful, if yoy have the points why not try to field both?

Re: Dragoons or Light Foot
Having used both I would go for the Dragoons. My Superior LF have not caused as much damage as a unit of 3 dragoons have in past games. I tend to keep them on the flanks where there is a better chance they can evade through a gap, as opposed to the center where there are too many friendly pike and shot units to block their evades.

Another discussion worth having is which would you choose, LF or commanded shot?

Re: Dragoons or Light Foot
In our last game I had both LF and a unit of commanded shot. As it turned out in the end I pulled a Madaxeman deploy and had the commanded shot on my left in a field (and they did their damnedest to stay in it until it was safe to move out and shoot up the enemy) while my cav was off on my right. In the end they worked better than the LF that was in the center, lost a base and kept losing cohesion and had to be rallied from fragged a few times, with inconclusive 1 die for shooting.
In this case the commanded shot seemed to work better as they were taking on LH and dragoons, while the LF was being beaten up by a P&S BG.

Richard
That is a tough one. I would take the CS but only because in the 1632 Swedish they are Salvo, which can cause a nasty little surprise...

LF everytime for me
Cheers
Alasdair
Though to be fair I field 5 units of 3 dragoons in my Louis XIV French so I'm not anti dragoons, just if I had the choice it would be LF
