Can the default My Games location folder be changed for PzC?

Post by El_Condoro »

I would really like to have this folder, with all its important and non-replaceable data, as part of my Dropbox folder so that it can be backed up. So far I cannot find any way to get PzC to use a folder other than the default My Games\Panzer Corps folder, so I am manually copying the files across to Dropbox for backup.

Is there a way, perhaps in the registry (have looked but can't see anything) to change this folder location?

As far as I know it's hardcoded.

Maybe a symbolic link can solve the problem.

Move the PC data from their original directory into your dropbox folder and then create there a symbolic link pointing to the new location. The game should call the OS functions to save the file and the OS should then follow the link and place the files in your dropbox folder. I will test it when i find some time. Of course before experimenting make a backup of your data first. You never know with computers.

Edit: I don't like untested ideas so i just took me the time to test it. :) Yes it is working. At least on Windows 7 and Vista. If you are still using Windows XP it doesn't support symbolic links but you can probably achieve the same using Junction points. I can not verify this tho as i do not have any Windows XP system anymore. On top of that the usage of junction points is a bit more tricky.

You have revolutionised my Dropbox! Thank you. Not only does it work for the application I had in mind, I can also now link to other PzC mods and folders (in the GME, for example) that I can now store in Dropbox and access anywhere. Cheers!

This is a brilliant solution Tarrak. I'm using this too, and can confirm that using junction to achieve this in XP also works (I'm now seamlessly sharing my Panzer Corps save files between a Windows 7 notebook and a Windows XP desktop)

Look at you and your fancy symbolic links!

Seriously though - nice workaround :)

Might be nice to have it in the game setup and options, if possible, too.
