Battle of Otterburn 1388

Post by stockwellpete »

This is really the "companion" battle to Radcot Bridge 1387, which I have made very recently. There is quite a reasonable version of this second battle included in the official FOG roster of battles, but I felt that my interpretation of the composition of the two forces was substantially different enough to warrant a second version (plus I am a bit of a historical "big-head" ).

Anyway, what I have tried to do here is to represent night-fighting in a forest, which was the historical reality of this encounter. So all the archers are "light foot" and the proportion of longbowmen in the English army has been reduced significantly (it is assumed that these joined the fighting as spearmen or billmen). And I have tried to create a kind of claustrophobic effect with the terrain and the starting deployment. You will see what I mean if you try the scenario.

The Scots have invaded England in order to try and take advantage of the internal chaos affecting the reign of Richard II. The Earl of Douglas has camped his army in a wood after spending the day trying unsuccessfully to take the small Otterburn castle (off map, across the river from the Scottish camp). He has not placed sentries, however, and so the English army, led by Sir Henry "Hotspur" Percy, is able to take the Scottish forces by surprise around nightfall.

Thank you for yet another hugely entertaining and illuminating scenario, 'pete. I've played both versions solitaire and yours is more exciting and challenging. With the original scenario, the Scots won, while with yours Hotspur managed to eke out a victory. Although my humble play may not be the definitive word on this scenario, it certainly indicated to me that balance has been improved too.
