Glyndwr's Revolt in Wales 1400-1415

Post by stockwellpete »

As some of you may know I have already made a War of the Roses two-player campaign game - and this is currently in its third and final play-test (see campaign forum). My next idea for a campaign is Glyndwr's revolt in Wales. I am currently reading up on this amazing series of events and I think it might be possible to build something around them with one player as Owain Glyndwr and the other as King Henry IV of England. I already have three scenarios (Myndd Hyddgen 1401, Pilleth 1402 and Shrewsbury 1403) made that I can incorporate into the campaign and maybe I can make a case for including another one already made (Bramham Moor 1408). I will still need to make a couple of castle siege-type scenarios and a town-assault scenario as well as some guerilla raid and ambush-type battles - and there references to other battles at Tuthill 1401, Ruthin 1402, Stalling Down 1403, Grosmont 1406, Pwll Melyn 1406, Angelsey 1406, Shropshire 1410 and Brecon 1412.

But what I want to do first is to play a few English versus Welsh battles from the DAG lists just to get a bit more idea of how I might use DAG battles in the campaign as well as my pre-made scenarios. In general terms the English army is better than the Welsh one, but this can be balanced by the terrain, to a considerable extent. So the two armies in question are . . .

i) HYW English (Britain) late
- must not pick any Welsh troops

ii) Medieval Welsh
- must not pick French allies unless specified beforehand (for the events in 1405)

Battles will be 500pts, FOW and DM on. Terrain will always be "very crowded" to represent difficult Welsh terrain (no "arid" maps can be chosen either).

Anyone interested?

OK Ferb and Fedem .

I'll put two paired games on in a minute. So no Welsh troops for the English, no French allies for the Welsh - and we'll all choose "very crowded" terrain with FOW and DM on. Password will be "glendower".

Hello Fedem,

I have just started playing with Ferb and the first thing that has struck me is that at 500pts both the English and Welsh armies are a bit boring - too many longbowmen and spearmen respectively. So I would like us to play our matches at 400pts (same conditions as indicated above). I hope that is OK. Apologies if you have already picked 500pt armies.

Yes OK, macsen. Sorry for delay but I was a bit rough yesterday. I will put 400pt challenge on shortly, password macsen.

This is not a competition, Supervark - I am just trying out the DAG to see how well it can create the type of battles that occurred during Glyndwr's Revolt. FOG is really about set-piece battles whereas the revolt was much more about guerilla warfare, ambushes, raids, the burning of towns and even castle sieges. There are also a few minor issues about the troop types in the DAG as well. My conclusion already is that I am really going to have to write nearly all the scenarios myself so that I can get the terrain and troop types right (what I think is "right" anyway).

But what I haven't tested yet is 250pts, so I will put on a paired game for us to play - Medieval Welsh versus HYW English (in Britain, later), password is "supervark".

EDIT: forgot to say, no French Allies for the Welsh and no Welsh troops for the English. And please pick "very crowded" terrain.

Thanks stockwellpete will get on that this evening. 250 sounds intresting about right for a guerilla raid on a small town.
