One nice thing I have learned playing the DLC 43 scenarios is how great the ME 410A tactical bombers are for DLC 43 as opposed to using Stukas. I have been using an imported core with only three fighters (FW 190s). At the start of DLC 43, I had 2 BF 110G's and 2 Stuka D bombers. I ended up converting them all to ME 410A's before starting Kharkov. I feel they have definitely given me a big edge in supplementing my air power. I know some of my colleagues out there know how to copy and paste game-shot photos of the actual stats for different units here in the forum for purposes of comparison, but that is beyond my limited computer skills. However, the ME 410A has many excellent attributes--initiative of 9, fuel of 105, a range of 14 vs. 11 for the Stuka, and importantly, an air attack of 16, and an air defense of 16. Because I have brought along these tactical bombers since DLC 39, they started Kharkov at 14 strength. As such, they can take a huge bite, if not entirely wipe out, all Russian fighters I have encountered in DLC 43, and they munch on the Russian bombers. I usually use the FW190's to make the initial hit, and then I can fly the ME 410A in to finish off what is left of the Russian fighter. So instead of having 3 fighters, it is like having 7.
When the skies have been cleared of Russian fighters and bombers, the 14 strength (or even 10 strength) ME 410A's do a pretty fantastic job at smashing tanks and infantry. The Stuka D and G variants have an edge on armor attacks, but with a couple of heroes for each ME 410A adding attack strength, it evens out.
Finally, the extra-long range and 2 hex spotting of the ME 410A is also a nice feature when flying all over the huge Russian maps trying to put out attacks as they pop up.
The case for using ME 410A's instead of Stukas in DLC 43

Yeah,
I thought about this conversion too. Thnkx for the headsup!

Yes, using 3 of those here as well in addition to 2 Ju 87D and 2 Ju 87G. They are fairly usefull for taking out weakened aircraft as well.

I am also a fan of the Me410.
I upgraded a Me110 to Me410 which was damn cheap and it's a really great unit.
Stukas get indeed shot down despite fighter escort and the "D" model doesn't do much to tanks, while the "G" model is specialized against tanks and can have range issues.
Unless the Stukas have heroes I think of disbanding them in favor of Me410s. We will stay at the Eastern Front for this DLC series and there they will work wonderfully.
Just think of the Battle for Britain and Stukas, they were indeed only viable in cases of total Air Supremacy and bad enemy fighters. Even American tanks and Infantry shoot them down!
I had an easier time with enemy airpower when I let fighters escape at 1-3 health. Initially I didn't do this intentionally, I just though it's better to have three toothless Russian fighters than 1 dead and 1-2 almost fully operational ones.
They fly back for 1-2 turns, repair, and then come back.
Shooting them down right away funnily causes terrible surprises like two of the stronger Lavochkin fighters popping up and destroying a Stuka.

Will not the next wave of aircraft simply spawn anyway leading to the same nasty surprises?

Very interesting, you make a compelling case! I think I am way too broke at present in the campaign to do any widespead upgrades however. Was this ME 410 unit in the default game? I don't remember ever seeing it.

Yeah, it's available right at the start of DLC 43. I brought in an imported core from DLC 42 and upgraded my BF110G's and Stuka D's to the ME410A before I started Kharkov. It definitely would be hard to make those upgrades later on in DLC 43 because almost all of your prestige is going to repair existing units.monkspider wrote:Very interesting, you make a compelling case! I also replaced my Stukas with Me 410, they can better survive especially against the horde of Red fighters!!!
