A Small Contest

Post by keyth »

Hi there,

I was wondering if there are four or five players who are interested in a small competition, layout as follows:

Each player picks two army lists (maybe select an expansion or two to have a bit of a theme) and starts with a score of 2000
In each round, you must play each other player once using either of your lists, using a 400 point army
After each battle, your score is reduced by (break points lost x average point cost per unit) / 2 (all armies are assumed to be the full 400 for this calculation) and a further 50 if your camp is looted

Example: Player A has 25 BGs, Player B has 30. Player A has a unit average of 16, Player B has 13. Player A wins 10/25 vs. 31/30 with both camps intact. He loses 80 from his score, Player B loses 202.

Once your score drops below zero, you have been knocked out. Once no more matches are available due to knock outs (it's possible that everyone will end up sub-zero!) the player with the highest score wins.

Let me know if you're interested.

This sounds like an interesting idea but it seems to me that the victor should get some benefit vs the loser in the calculation beyond just the raw numbers for BGs lost.

That was part of my initial thinking, but I sort of like the idea that winning is its own reward - in this case, you have lost less points than the loser. Perhaps a winner's bonus of 50 if your camp was looted, guaranteeing that you don't lose more points than the loser of the battle? Key to the idea as that your score never goes up - it's a one way slide towards zero...

The idea is to promote not just winning but to win as well as possible, which is why I probably won't last long :) I've seen and done things in the last few turns of a battle that secure a win but essentially waste troops. This format is an attempt to encourage 'humane' generalship!

OK, it looks like we have enough players to give this a go. I have a busy weekend coming up so will start on Monday. Choose one ROR and one SOA army list - please no Later Romans or Swiss! :)

Hi Turk,

I have no problem with allies, does anyone else?

I'm considering something Pyrrhic for RoR and Later Medieval Swedish for SOA. I'll think over the weekend and decide on Monday.

Cheers

Morning all,

It's Monday so let's get things moving :) I was thinking over the weekend that each player should be permitted one army swap, just in case you find yourself playing something that you aren't enjoying. It should be fun after all.

The players are:

keyth (UK)
BurinusAgricolae (Italy?)
Aristides
Turk1964

I'll be playing:

Later Macedonian, 28 BGs, so the average per unit is 14 (400/28 = 14.3 rounds down)
Later Medieval Swedish, 26 BGs, average per unit is 15 (400/26 = 15.4 rounds down)

To recap the structure of the contest:

Each player starts with a score of 2000.
In each round, they will play each other player twice, once with a FoG/ROR army, once with SoA.
Fog of war ON, Double moves ON.
After each battle the players' scores are reduced by (Break points lost * average value per unit) / 2.
There is an additional penalty of 50 points if your camp is looted, though this is negated if you are the winner.
Once a player's score drops below zero, they have been knocked out of the contest.
When there are no more valid matches left (<= 1 player with a positive score) then the player with the highest score wins.

I have put up three challenges for the FoG/ROR stage, password 'keyth'. Please pick one up when you're ready and good luck to all!
