Late Republican Romans ( Pompey in Spain)

Post by spener89 »

Hi guys, im new to FoG so not entirely sure this army is legal but i was wondering on your opinions on this as a representative force for roman armies operating in spain. Im not looking for an army capable of trashing all comers, but more a competant list with some flavour.

Field CinC 50 points
Legionaries (6) 84 points
Legionaries (6) 84 points
Legionaries (6) 84 points

Troop CO 35 points
Legionaries (6) 84 points
Legionaries (6) 84 points
Legionaries (6) 84 points

Troop CO 35 points
Heavy Cav (6) 54 points
Ligurian Foot (6) 30 points
Slingers (6) 24 points

Spanish Scutarii (6) 42 points
Slingers (6) 24 points

800 points is the max for this list, and this clocks in at 798 according to my maths! Thoughts anyone?

Don't like the Spanish as a 6 as I feel they are fragile-up them to an 8. Would drop the roman cav to a 4 as they should be evading before fighting. In general you want your legions stuck in ASAP, as they will run through most native Spanish troops.

Also consider 4 troop commanders rather than the field commander (if you can get the points to work out).
What quality are the legions?

Thanks for the replies, some things to consider. The legions are superior to make sure that they can chew through spanish and other (rebellious) legions, the plan was to get them into combat as soon as possible to break the enemies centre while just using the native auxilia as mere speedbumps on the flanks.

If i drop the cinc down to a troop commander and the cav down to 4 bases then i might be able to get the points for a 4th commander. The extra range on the slingers is better then the duality of javelins imo, what do you guys think?

Drop the cav down to a 4 and consider running them as protected superior. That way they can support legionaires. Protected average are just asking to get into trouble.

I usually run javelins to fight other LF, but they are better at scare than actual killing and the javelins tend to get pulled out of position to shoot back.
So I believe you may have a point.

Protected JLS LF are OK but (unprotected) slingers are better value for the points. Their greater range means they can shoot with far less chance of being caught if charged.
