Crisis of the Republic tournament starts on March 1st

Post by Demetrios »

CRISIS OF THE REPUBLIC TOURNAMENT

This tournament will simulate the course of a political career in ancient Rome.

It´s an easy join in and easy drop out contest, not depending on reliability of the respective participants.

The team of moderators (Demetrios & TJD) represents the Senate of Rome.

The campaign will be played on a map, that will be available at the start of the tournament on the 1st of March.

A set of army compositions for the involved nations ( Rome, Roman Allied, Independent Nations) will be used for phase 1 and 2 of the tournament.

A set of 5 historical scenarios will be used for the final showdown ( phase 3). Battle at Baetis River, Battle of Lauron, Battle at Mt. Garganus, Siege of Cyzigus, Battle of Cabira.

1. there will be no limit to the number of participants, means signing in won´t be mandatory.
2. participants will have to visit the forum thread "Roman Senate" as often they can. This thread will be updated continuously. Tasks for interested parties will be posted here.
3. Examples for tasks (phase 1):
3.1. "The Roman Senate hereby assigns a commander for the expeditionary forces in Egypt to support our valuable allied against marauders from the Kingdom of Kush"
The taker (early bird gets the job) will be promoted to the rank of a Legatus.
3.2. The guy, who takes over command will have to fight a battle in command of Roman Ptolemaic against the Kingdom of Kush.( All non - Roman Armies will be commanded by the Moderators only ). In case the Roman commander wins, he´ll get an amount of bonus points, for example 3 pts = votes (see explanation in phase 3).
3.3. another task might be to unravel a mystery: "Who am I ? Compared to other one-eyed commanders of the ancient era, I was considered more faithful to my friends than Antigonus and even more merciful to my foes than Hannibal..." The first answer wins an amount of bonus points = votes
etc.
3.4. Events and battle results will be posted here too.

(Phase 2)
With the backup of a minimum of 10 pts=votes the respective commander will be promoted to the rank of a Praetor and subsequently assigned to rule one of the Roman Provinces. He will be awarded bonus points (votes ) for every week he keeps control of the province. The provinces will be threatened by uprising tribes and invaders.
Extra points will be awarded for oppressing rebellions and repelling invaders. Following a defeat of the respective governor, he will be recalled to the Roman Senate.
He´ll stay there inactive (without any bonus pts) until he´ll be assigned to rule another province.

(Phase 3)
3 months after the start of the tournament, the 4 participants with the highest amount of points (votes) will form parties. The parties will be: Republicans, Imperials, Aristocrats and Populars. Each of these party leaders will run for the rank of a Roman Consul. Now an election campaign follows. The two candidates who add the most votes (Legatus & Governors with their amounts of votes ) to their respective party will be elected. The two Consules take over parts of the Moderator roles as they´ll assign the Governors to the Provinces.
(A powerful position that can be used not only during the electional campaign to recruit party members)
Now the two Consules decide what campaign they want to fight, one of them will have to fight two battles against Sertorius, the other one against Mithridates.
The one who first defeats the Roman foes in both battles will take on the Slaves. Finally beating the Slaves wins the contest. Losing one of these battles, means to be buried with the reached high score. Each killed Consul immediately has to be replaced by election.

Sounds interesting to me....

As I understand it, YOU will design 1 map (or more?) and then the armies of both sides. You will then 'assign' orders (or quests for lack of a better word) to the just promoted commander and he will play against you or the other moderator. Should he win, he will get pts, and assigned another task etc.

Is that the short of it?

Hi, my friend.

I´ll post a strategical map, covering the South-/ Southeast Europe / North Africa and the Middle East. This map will be used to keep track of all events that have an impact on the campaign. Battles will be fought using the DAG system, with pre - assembled armies of 400 pts each, taken from the RoR and IF books. Points will be awarded for takers of a challenge,
for victories, for unraveling mysteries etc. Reliable players, who continuously check the "Roman Senate", with good social contacts to other participants and outstanding knownledge on the subject of ancient history will have the best chance to win the campaign.

Cheers, Klaus aka Demetrios

Hi.

Make sure you check the thread "Roman Senate" ( n/a until March 1st) continuously.

All armies are pre - assembled, new scenarios are completed and tested for balancing, the map is ready

and tons of questions on ancient history are prepared too.

Means this is actually no announcement, but a call to arms.

Take care, Klaus

GREAT!!! I have a degree in Cultural Anthropology that went to about the end of the Roman Empire (after that I am pretty clueless). So I am really looking forward to 'living' that era, and it sounds like you have done the research (no mean feat in itself) to make it lifelike. Well Done!!

In the "Forgotten Legion" trilogy there are 3: Forgotten Legion, Silver Eagle, and Road to Rome. He also has titles on Hannibal and Spartacus too I believe.

Hi Tim.

Thanks for the update.

Assume some of the questions will be rather easy, others really hard nuts to crack, but you won´t have to study ancient history to take part.

Gentlemen.

Thanks ! Tim and me are really curious to see what happens. Running a completely new tournament design is always very challenging,

We are ready to go on the 1st of March. Tournament will commence with the "Roman Senate" posting 10 historical questions.

Thanks again, Klaus
