Do undrilled guys make a "difficult" move to conta

Post by GordonJ »

This question came up in a recent game -- it seems to have gone unasked in all my previous games.

My elephants were 2MU away from the enemy camp, and just before I moved them into contact we had a discussion on whether that was a "difficult" forward move.

The rules certainly say that an enemy camp counts as "enemy within 6MU". They also say that the move is not a charge because it happens in the manoeuvre phase (p78). But the rules are silent on whether "undrilled others", such as elephants, can make a short move to contact the enemy camp without passing a CMT.

Any views?

Here are the best 2 threads I can find on sacking camps. Neither of them addresses your specific questions. I agree the rules are silent on the issue.

Here's the authors view on this one ... short errata to follow to make sacking only possible with a frontal contact.

1. Troops sacking a camp need a CMT to break off - sacking happens immediately on contact for unfortified camps
2. Troops attempting to sack a fortified camp are locked once they break in, but they are not locked before that.
3. They are not in close combat as defined in the rules glossary - which is a handy way to separate them from other combats as I believe breaking off from a defended wall is very do-able for all troops (have put this little bit onto the stream)
4. They can therefore make normal moves if say they wanted to give up on trying to break in but need to take CMT's as usual for any moves normally requiring them.
5. While troops have their front bases in front edge contact they get a roll to break in (we are going to issue an errata to make it front edge only as this is what we intended).

Cheers

Page 22 says that an army's supply camp is not a battle group. Page 41 says it is a difficult move to wheel or move less than full within 6 mu of an enemy supply camp. Page 75 says you are exempt from passing a CMT to wheel or move less than full if moving into contact with an enemy BG. Page 78 says the move into contact with the enemy camp is not a charge. And, per #3 above, attacking a camp is not considered melee.

After reading so many author comments, I can't imagine that they don't require a CMT by 'other undrilled' to move into contact with a BG but would require it to move into contact with an enemy camp. I'm guessing they would say you can't wheel or move short within 6 of an enemy camp unless you contact the camp. That's how I'll rule until they say something to the contrary; or, someone points out something I missed.

I think as the RAR you needed to make a CMT BUT I don't think you should. I think it's one of those unintentional wording issues.
