Your best Units (eg. Kills, Heroes)

Post by Locarnus »

Hello,

I saw in some other thread a list how many kills you need for the medals and just wanted to know how everyone is doing in regards to kills and heroes, what special/best/most useful units you all have in your core forces.

My "super" units:

GC39
Inf: close tie between a Para 350/M1 (350 kills, Movement +1 hero) and a Pionier 342/M1

GC40
Inf: Pionier 779/M1D3 even in the open, they can hold their ground...
Tanks: PzIVD 568/A3, a much better attack against those allied heavier ones
Arty: a close call between a towed 15cm 507/A3 and a Sturmpanzer 498/R1 (I modded the Sturmpanzer for only range 2 instead of 3, so this really helps)
CAS: Ju87R 553/A3
other: 88Flak36 706/I3, MatildaII? Bunkers? Fortresses? If this beast comes in range, there is no hope for the enemy! It is my only 88, but while other units may save the day, this one can save the battle.

Right now I have a couple that I really like (end of GC 41)

Pioniere with M2 (750ish kills)

Stuka (850 kills)

Both of my Char b1s are just beasts. They move fairly well and can take it on the chin from soviet armor. And anything short of a KV just gets wrecked by these guys. Very nice tanks.

At the start of DCL 42 I have an 88 with +2 movement. That makes it very useful and adaptable.

At the start of '42:

Infantrie: Gebirgsjäger - 1071 kills +1 movement +1 attack
Panzer: Tie between two newly upgraded Pz IVF2s: 1181 kills +2 movement (can't wait for the heavies ;) ) vs. 1198 kills +1 movement +3 defense
Recon: SdKfz 232 (only contender) - 328 +1 movement
AT: Marder IIA (only contender) - 144 kills - the poor Panzerjäger IB was just too weak to have seen lots of action
Artillery: Wurfrahmen 40 - 881 kills +1 range
AAA: Flak 8,8cm 36 (only contender) - 635 kills +1 movement (just great for this one)
Fighters: Bf109F - 522 kills +3 Initiative (80 less than a Bf 109F with +1 movement)
Ground support: Ju 87D - 1824 kills +2+2 attack edit: During turn6 of Vitebsk and with 1854 kills now I got a 3rd hero, +3 Defense this time - even though I would have prefered attack for a 3rd tiume again +3 defense is not that bad - might be even very good if it works fairly well vs. AAA (anybody has tried high defense Stukas vs. AAA?)
Heavy Bomber: Do 217E - 260 kills +2 defense

I am a medal hunter here and play all scenarios right up to the last turn, but as I said in the other thread, I think it will be quite hard to get the last medal before DLC #6 unless really focusing on a single unit.

In addition I am fairly carefull with my units who got good heroes and let the "normal" guys take the dangerous assignments ;)

CharonJr

PS: My overall favorite is/will be the Pz IVF/2 with his +2 movement (at least when the Tigers start to arrive).

One of my top killers is my 88. This unit is awesome in the DLC campaigns, and if it has a +movement hero it becomes really outrageous.

My top scorer is a Stuka. Assuming I can keep it alive in DLC 42 and DLC 43, this unit is on its way to being Rudel. :D

Interesting to see how different we are using the Stukas.

You seem to use them mainly to soften up enemy units, I mainly use them to kill already weakened/softened units ;)

A necessary evil of Manstein difficulty setting. Taking on 15 strength units requires me to soften them up first or take grievous casualties on return fire, and since artillery is pretty bad at softening up tanks, I call in the air support.

1824 kills at the end of GC41 is really impressive.

I noticed too late that you need those many kills for the highest medal, so I often refrained from using my Stukas to train my ground forces.
As I understand now, the Stuka is the only unit able to get 3600 kills total, so I started training my best Stuka specifically since the scenario before Moscow.
It goes fairly well now, but I d be happy to reach 1300 kills by the end of GC41. Wouldnt surprise me if I were in Berlin in GC45, my Stuka is at 10 fuel and 1 ammo, scoring a last kill and getting the last medal in flight, before crashing into the ground, since all airfields were lost to the soviets...
At least if Kerensky is allowed to make Berlin as nightmarish as he stated somewhere here in the forum

Yes, I use them to soften up tanks and dug in infantry as well, but vs. any kind of artillery there are mainly there to kill them after artillery softened them up or suppressed AAA.

Finally finished GC41.

Compared to the first 2 GCs, the infantry units get much fewer kills, while tank units get much more kills now (although there are more tanks in use now).

GC41
Inf: Pioniere 1124/M1D3 and less kills but better heros Pioniere 1080/I3M1
Tanks: Pz IVD 1066/M1A3, lots of attack and movement heros, would have preferred some initiative ones, but none so far. However useless the movement heros are right now (because the mobile arty cant keep up, I cant go so far anyway), I cant wait for tigers and especially king tigers...
Arty: Wurfrahmen40 850/R2, I have another Wurfrahmen with 930/A3, but the 2 Range +1 heros are simply awesome.
CAS: Ju87D 1373/A6, the one I try to get medals with, since end of 41.
Fighter: Bf109F 599/I3A3, my only fighter unit with initiative hero, but this one is very deadly with overstrength
other: 88Flak36 1185/I3D3, got the D3 hero, which is quite useless so far on the 88, since no one shoots back anyway... (arty cover and initiative power), one of the many tank movement heros would have been much more useful.

Overall I got very good heroes. I seem to get lots of attack and quite many movement and range heros, only 4 initiative heros (3 of them are great and in the list above), very few defense ones.

I really like the balance of the hero system in the game.

+INI on fighters, keep it as a Bf-109E. +attack, upgrade it to a Bf-109F.

+attack on infantry, use it to crush armor in close terrain.

+defense on infantry, you don't have to worry too much about those if you leave them in close terrain when fighting against AI infantry.

+INI on infantry, well, that is just too good...

Similarly attack, defense, INI on tanks have various uses. The +attack ones are awesome for attacking suppressed targets.

Unfortunately, you do get a few bad heroes once in a while. +spotting on tanks, ugh, just horrible.

Two of the tanks that I started 39 with have some fairly crappy heroes that I have made useful.

Both have a movement hero and a spotting hero. Neither of those I find ideal for an armored unit.

Funny enough, I have not needed a recon unit since mid '41. With a movement of 6 and a spot of 3 these two Panzer IVG's are the toughest recon vehicles ever.

On the bottom right of the button grid in the game there is a 'switch' button. It turns your 88 AD unit into an ATG unit. :)

Playing the 1942DLC (since 1939) on FM.

My best unit is this Stuka. It has an Attack +5 bonus and 2,078 KILLS!! I use it to crack the real tough nuts. :D

Image

My 88 - Don't leave home without it. 760 Kills with a +2 Defence bonus. I wish i could get a movement hero.

Image

My best Panzer. 1,269 Kills. With Initiative +3 bonus.

I have a Ju87D with +5 attack (2 heroes) 1657 kills and a PzIVG +1 attack with 1102 Kills. I also have an 88 with +1 movement. I'm starting to assault Sevastopol so those numbers should be going up. I hope I get another attack bonus hero on that Stuka!

Well such things should be mentioned in the tutorial, along with special properties like Pioniere ignoring entrenchment and Pioniere and 88 especially great against fortresses.

There should be an "advanced tutorial" to cover that kind of info.

I can hardly remember using my 88 against aircraft, its normally in AT mode all the way...

By the way there needs to be a 88Flak41, preferrably in end of 43 or so. Eg with at least 10 initative, at least 6 defense (much lower profile), high rate of fire and hard attack comparable but lower than the KingTiger.

And the 12.8cm Flak was never ever used as a mobile Flak unit, it was stationary only and bolted to concrete ground, otherwise by shooting you would disassemble the own carriage...

You're right, this SHOULD be mentionned in the tutorial.
