Development timetable?

Post by El_Condoro »

Now that it's a new year and all that I am wondering if there is a development timetable for PzC beyond the DLCs. By 'beyond' I do not mean 'after'. The reason that I ask is that the only innovation that seems to be occurring in PzC (aside from the great modding work of the community) is driven by the DLCs - a few units in each, a few minor features. The change to the campaign system (the Mods folder) is a good one but again driven by the DLCs. As good as the DLCs are, I am wondering how much of the innovation needed in game design in general will occur in the near future. I have been working on my Red Dawn campaign and have been reminded of the shortcomings of the Editor again.

For example, innovation is needed IMO in these areas.

1. The AI needs a lot of work to be effective in offence. Yes, it can attack now but it cannot use artillery on the attack (the old drive them in trucks to the door to be slaughtered trick) and it cannot use paratroops. It uses fighters to attack ground targets and not other fighters. There are other things that will need to be done to make the AI more effective on the attack but will we have to wait until the DLCs get to the Allies' offensives in the DLCs to get the needed changes?
2. My biggest request - needed changes to the Editor. There have been a mountain of requests for change (see the Scenario Design forum) and yet only one significant change has occurred in the Editor - the action scripts (which are great BTW).
3. Tweaks to the UI - display of hero traits; use some of that real estate in the bottom right of the screen etc.

They are only 3 dot points but each is complex and time consuming. Can anyone please give some hint as to what we can expect in PzC in terms of innovation - part of a DLC or other - in the first half of 2012 or earlier?

yeah i have to agree. To keep PanzerCorps alive you have to enhance the editor.
I mean look at the game neverwinter nights with its awesome editor. The modding community is still active and the game was released in 2002.
The main reason for the development of the dlc's is money. A patch for the main game doesnt bring any profit.
All i wish is a scripting language or a plugin system for the editor. The rest is done by the community.
That is my opinion ...

EDIT: BTW you should add PCorps to moddb. This should make your game a little bit more popular ..

sry for bad english

We have a working schedule well into 2013 in place for Panzer Corps.

We will and cannot go into details, but behind the scenes there is a lot more going on and coming, besides the DLC `s that is. When, how, what... no comments at this point, just that we are working and planned way ahead already.

You will just have to wait, have faith and be patient.

But support and continuous development are guaranteed for at least the next 18-24 months.

If I worked at Lordz studio, I would be thinking of ways to milk the PC engine for the next 10 years! All WW2 theaters of conflict could be addressed, and then other wars...WW I, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq/Afghanistan, the American Civil War...This game and its basic concepts will always have a cult following and will have Panzer Core gamers (who, according to a recent poll here, are generally over 30 years of age) coming back for more.

I think it would be great if a new, stand-alone scenario could be released every week to give us something to tide us over until the next DLC is released.

That is absolutely wonderful news, Tim. PzC is a wonderful game, and I can't wait to see what's coming up next for this game. :D

Its good to see Panzer Corps will be supported into the future. As someone who predominantly plays MP games, i hope for more improvements to unit balance, feature implementation and game play. :D

Started a sketch to some of the UI improvements a couple of weeks ago, it was then that I realised that there is no free screen area.
Check the screenshots:

My guess is that developers wanted to keep the resolution at a minimum of 1024x600 to tap into the tablet market and the UI was thought with that in mind.

Interesting pick up. Yes, most of us probably run in a much higher res and seem to have more space.

Continued dev and support for another year or even significantly more is great news indeed :)

Please don't be upset by my asking, but I have been good... I haven't inquired in over 4 months.

But seeing how you have a working schedule well into 2013, perhaps you have a projected Mac release date now?

If you need a target date, I have a birthday coming up at the end of March. :D

You deserve a Mac edition, even if it was only for you.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I understand the workings of business. I will have to wait my turn.

But every once and a while my desires get the best of me. I must admit that while watching A Christmas Story I felt like Ralphie pressed up against the glass at the front of the store.

I will have my Red Ryder PzC!

BTW, it would really help if you or somebody else maintained a thread in the modding forum with all Editor requests kept in one place. Modding forum is quite active, and I don't always follow all of the threads, so it is very easy to miss something important.

Yes, this is correct. In fact we were very limited in what we could do in the game by supporting anything down to typical netbook resolutions in our screen layouts. For example, PG originally ran in 640x480, and PzC supports 1024x600 which is not even 2x bigger, while unit icons in PzC are ~2x bigger than in PG, and other UI elements are bigger too. But screen layouts are moddable, so I'm a bit surprised that we still don't have user mods for larger screens yet. ;)

Exact release date for Mac will be clear only when we are very far with implementation, and this is not the case. So no specific dates yet, sorry, but I'll keep in mind your birthday date. ;)

No problem - it has been there for a while. Do you want me to sticky it?

It is a good thread, thx for reminder. But is it up to date with the more recent requests? I see the last post is from 3rd of October.

What are the recent requests? They might already be there - just add if not (doesn't matter if there are duplicates).
