Battle of Mynydd Hyddgen

Post by JonPowles »

I have just designed the first scenario I'm happy with - the 1401 battle of Mynydd Hyddgen, the first skirmish in Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh rebellion of 1400-1415. See the Wikepedia article on the battle for background. Can you replicate Owain Glyndŵr's feat and defeat an English army of 30 heavy BG's with only 10 Welsh BG's of medium foot?

I'd really appreciate an experienced player/designer doing a playtest of this with me and tweaking it for balance, and any other advice.

The file can be downloaded here

Cheers

Hello Jonathan,

I can't do anything today as I am off to work shortly but I would be interested in looking at this battle with you. I have done my own version and I have also done Bryn Glas. I have "bounced" my earlier thread about the Welsh Revolt so you can see what I have tried to do with it. I will download your scenario tomorrow and perhaps we can have a game or two. I think our troop compositions for the two armies are quite different so it will be interesting to compare sources.

Cheers Pete. Hadn't seen your battle before making mine.

Actually, the two aren't a million miles apart. You have the Welsh as mounted, as per the sources - however I had assumed they wouldn't fight on horseback, just use the ponies for transport? So I made them MF. I also bumped the English cavalry up to heavy - ahistorically -as I wanted them hampered by the mucky ground. I see you did the same for the colonist foot, which you have as HF, while I kept these border spearmen as MF.

Either way, the point is to keep the Welsh competitive with way fewer troops.

My scenario was specifically designed for AI play - I can beat the AI with the handful of Welshmen provided I keep them out of harm's way :-)

Love to have a gane or two

OK then. I have put a paired game on the system, password is - stockwell. I shall be at home over the holiday period so I will be able to get some moves in.

Jonathan,

Just one thing to look at in the new version. For the Welsh archers that are LF you have used a MF image of three archer figures - you can use the LF image of two archer figures to clearly distinguish between the two types of units. It is quite important here as LF can be driven off the small battlefield quite easily.
