Upgrading Units ?

Post by konrad »

I have just bought SPARTAN and at this moment I am fighting the "Peleponnese 733BC - Spartan Expansion" campaign as the Spartans... I'm doing fairly well at the moment (no wonder cause I'm only playing at Normal difficulty setting, but hey... I'm still learning this game). The year is 727BC and I already captured 8 cities... and now I am regrouping my forces and building fortifications (Medium forts) in the border areas... Things are looking good for the Spartans...

But now I have a question...

Up until now I have fought with Proto-Hoplites (supported by Psiloi Javelinmen and Prodromoi)... Last couple of battles I started to encounter Thracians instead of the usual Astynomia. So my enemies were building stronger and better units... That's why, at the moment I stopped my conquest to rebuild my forces... I have the technology to build upgraded Heavy, Light and Skirmisher Barracks, so I'm busy to upgrade them in all my cities...

But... I have a field army that consists (among other units) of 3 Proto-Hoplite units, which have seen a lot of battle (front line in each and every battle) and are quite experienced... Can I upgrade these Proto-Hoplites to Hoplites (and save some experience) or do I need to disband my experienced Proto-Hoplites in favour of new (untested) Hoplite units ??

Thanks

You can only upgrade your garrisons, not your field armies...but these proto-hoplites will do a good job in battle, give them a chance... :D

Or split them up and put them in frontier towns for garrison duties. Or make another army with new units and have this "old" one cover the other one. But yes, unfortunately you cannot upgrade your units.
Plato was right.

That's a shame... It would have been nice if you would have been able to upgrade your units (only in cities which have the correct barracks...)

Well... I think I'll just (gradually) replace the Proto-Hoplites in my field army to Hoplites (or Spartiates in a while) and send these experienced Proto-Hoplites to some coastal cities for defence (no use in sending them to border areas cause with a Medium fort I get 3 squads of Hoplites for free !!)

Thanks for the answers...

(maybe and idea for the next patch... if there is going to be another one. ???)

unfortunatly the upgrading of units is not patchable (is that a word) its the way the game was designed, but its possible to get high experience units with the correct training facilitys altough this takes time to develope...I tend to find its best to recycle out dated units....... :D
