NATO Symbol Unit Mod

Post by Magpius »

Just created a unit mod.
You can download it from
http://hosted.filefront.com/oldmagpie
I think...

It's taken a long time to complete, and feedback is welcome.

The smaller units re not included in the download. But I am working on those. Suggestions. Particularly in terms of assigned values. for Attack/ Defence and Movement on units.
Also, to the powers that be; it would be really nice if future games had ALL the units on a SINGLE countersheet graphic, as saving individual units files are a ROYAL PAIN.

Those units look really nice :D, but I have a few comments.

1) Remember that the units are supposed to be corps. A corps uses 3 X's (XXX). 2 X's (XX) is a division sized unit.

2) I would prefer to see the garrisons with a different symbol than the infantry symbol. E. g. use just the square without the X to show a static corps. You have also shown the garrisons with a single vertical line (|). Isn't that used for company sized units?

Look here for info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APP-6a

3) Are the numbers on the counters dynamic? E. g. when you increase your technology you also increase the attack and defense strength of the units. At some tech level the movement range increases as well.

4) For air units it's probably smarter to show the air RANGE instead of the air movement factor. Slitherine is thinking about changing this for a future patch so why not do that already now and save some future work. The air range is more important than the movement factor because the range shows how far you can bombard etc.

the numbers are graphic. I don't have the skills to crack source code. (anglo german war has dynamic unit counters)
thanks for the link.
will mod after additional comments.

Remember also that the Russian units should have 4 X's. Russian armies had the approximate same size as Allied corps.

I saw your new symbols. They look good, but the new garrison symbol with one line is used in most wargames for cavalry units. It's better if you just draw the rectangle box and don't draw a cross or dash. A cross is an infantry unit, a dash is a cavalry unit, no lines is a static unit.

Air units are rarely symbolized with corps or army X's. But you can have them for static units.

nice work on the counters.

Next step is to enroll you in computer programming classes, so you can code the counters to show actual stats! :D

Hi

Very nice counters :D

But just some notes.
I think numbers on the counters below the badge should be removed because they are dynamic and doesn't need to be there either. If you must have something below the badge, than whrite the unit name under it. For example "Panzer" for armed units, "Infantry" for infantry units, "BB" for battleship units and so on.
The garrisson troops can be shown as infantry with a "G" in the middle, better than use the cavalry symbol.
The motorized units badge is wrong as you use mechanized unit badge, not the same as motor units.

About the air counters, I prefer air planes silouttes like WIF or something as you did for the ships.

Otherwise they look pretty good.

Good to have people who want to improve the games.
Keep up the good work there.

Mike,
Although the numbers are not dynamic, I use them as a partial reminder of the inherent strength of the unit.
I like the idea of text under the symbol, although it is graphically redundant as the symbol already tells you what type of unit it is.
Thanks for the feedback.

I just got back into this game; any chance that the map shown in the screen shots and the unit mods could be made available for the GS 2.0 upgrade? Thank you in advance for any help! These look beautiful, great work!

We have made our own NATO unit mod (new one for GS v2.1) and with that version you get real numbers on the counters so if you get a tech upgrade then number will change.

The map in GS v2.1 is very different from the vanilla CeaW as well.

When and where is that available? I remember how much I enjoyed the mechanics and ease of this game to get into. I am just not a fan of the washed out looking map and counters. Any information on your mod would be most appreciated!
