Simferopol on General difficulty.

I upgraded both Mathilda II's to PzIVG. And both level bombers to the new He177A. Reinforced the rest.

In the meantime i got several 4* units which take up more PP when reinforcing. I still can't complain about my reserve thou.

Simferopol is one step from Sevastopol. It is a fast scenario (limited to 13 turns) and a blitzkrieg scenario. The mission is a shooting gallery both for ground and air units.
The russian tanks you face are obsolete (perhaps last stock units) and the infantry doesn't offer much of a fight. Enemy air units are sparse, so you have air superiority.
It is the easiest mission sofar and the protection of Karl and Gustav is plain easy. They are nice to have them on the battlefield but on this map they don't have any nuts to crack.
I assume it is a moment of "peace" for things to come...

DV in 11/13 turns, 1498PP.

3 things with the briefing on this one.

No time for pleasantries, Herr General, we must get right down to business.

,High command has ordered that the Crimean peninsula and the vital Black Sea port of Sevastopol be secured.

If you manage to fulfill all of these objectives

These are the corrections! :)

Simferopol
starting 7100
after upgrades, reinforcements, taxes and fees 3300
ending prestige 3700
DV on turn 10
No losses

This was really a fairly easy one, but still fun. I would say it is really quite trivial to keep the siege guns alive, as Nikki said. Although the last couple battles left my force pretty badly mauled, casualties on this one were pretty minimal, I only had 2 tanks and maybe 2 infantry that had their strength approach the 6-7 level. It was a bit refreshing to be able to "catch my breath" on this one, knowing what is to come. Now it is time to turn our attention to the "world's greatest fort."

5413 Starting PP
1390 End PP, DV in turn 9
no losses

Upgraded the Char, the Somua and the T-34/40 who had heroes or some experience to Panzer IVG. Excellent tank!

The scenario is quite easy, a bit too easy. Most tanks are light tanks, only 4 T-34/41 and a KV-2.
My StuGIIIF were attacked by Infantry and struggled, brrr! But at least they really shot those light tanks to crap, but what doesn't.
I hope they see more use in future scenarios or maybe...

Suggestion: Turn some BT-7 into T-34/41.
Maybe those on the right flank.
Simferopol could use some fortifications and entrenched infantry so that the tanks don't just rush through and surround the city.

Interesting: In turn 9 suddenly some fighters popped up, despite me having a tank standing right on the airfield in the lower right corner.

Decided to ASSAULT Sevastopol. If I don't make it, I have at least tried. :)

Text errors: Quite some! see text errors posting.

the mention of the Black sea ports and some water had me expecting some kind of naval presence which there was not so I had taken both my level bombers out this time. this is pretty much straight forward roll over anything that is standing in your path. Started out on turn one taking both cities that were in range and managed to 1 shot a lot of Russians with the PZ IV's. I had bought some extra artillery pieces in 41 for the last scenario, I thought they were 17cm guns but it turns out they were the 21cm guns. I have ended up running with 4 artillery and 3 Stug III's so far in 41. The Karl and Moser were really not that great at doing more than one hit and supression, but what can one expect if they are only 5 strength? Once my forces started rolling it was a case of unstoppable force of Germans for the most part. Pretty much anything the russians left in my path got destroyed. the enemy tanks in this one are pretty much all outdated stuff that dies just seeing your Panzers rolling towards it. However the Russian infantry did manage to kill an SE PZIII/J with lucky shot. it started at 8 strength, got hit for 5 hits and then was reduced to 1 then died. Why are my units to stubborn that they insist on standing all the time at 1 strength? If only the Russians would do that more often instead of always retreating on me.

This one ended up with a line of panzers that pretty much kept the line as it moved southwards destroying everything in their path. Aside from a few nasty hits on the Stug III's from infantry it was a pretty easy run with mostly minor repairs at the end. Even the recon managed to survive this one.

Rest For The Weary?

Post by raykruse »

As others have posted...this scenario seemed to be mostly a rest for the weary. Certainly fun, a steady advance down to the city practically "in-line" the whole way.

Enjoyable and allowed for some rest and retrofit, I would like to see an armor upgrade (as mentioned in the previous post) to give the Russians a little more "punch" on their right flank and maybe a possibility of attacking or damaging the escorts?

Smiferopol:

Somehow I captured ANOTHER T34 last scenario and didn’t notice?? This is going to be quite the trend I see.

Preserving the two monstrous German artillery pieces was easy and hardly a challenge. Is there no way for instance to force the AI to attack with its bombers, or to do something? I guess this sort of code might require an expansion pack.

The Russians had a lot of units, but they weren’t generally of high quality. It took some time to fight my way through the hordes of AI units, but there didn’t seem to be enough Russian bombers or tanks, although there were plenty of infantry and some small field artillery. I’d upgrade a good number of those range 2 artillery to range 3 ones, because the range 2 artillery are useless in the hands of the AI. At least the conscripts actually attacked and did decently, almost killing one of my Panzer IVGs in combination with a T34/41.

In conclusion: Add slightly more Russian air and tank units, and upgrade its artillery.

Simferopol
Level: FM
Starting/ending prestige: 8855 / 5746
Uprades: 8x Pz IVF/2 >> IVG, 1x He111 H2 >> He177 A. Somehow missed this one for Kharkov. Now I got my Reichsfackel.
Purchase: -
Reinforcement core/aux: Elite/Normal
Result; after n-turn: DV; 9/13
Losses core/aux: 0/-

This map was the first real disappointment in this DLC. Far to straight, far to easy. No real tough nuts to crack, nothing challenging. I would really suggest the following changes:

- I could bait two times infantry out of their trenches in town. This should not happen, make the infantry in the cities absolutely stay entrenched.

- The Sovjet panzers are just trash mobs. Please change some of them to T34/41 or better let the trash stay and add two ore three T34/41.

Simferopol. DV in 13 turns.
Start prestige: 3. End prestige: 118.
New units purchased: Wurfrahmen, Ju87, Do 217E (all at deployment).
Units lost: Core -- cavalry, Stug, pioniere, bruckpioniere.
Medals: 2. Heroes: 1.

A frantic battle into the Crimea. The mission started with heavy fighting around Voinka, which I managed to clear out by turn 3. I then drove south, literally keeping a solid line across the peninsula. I took Voskhod on turn 6, and things seemed to be going well when, once again, the Russians put up a stiff counterattack in the east on turn 7. Of course the Red Air Force continues to be a real thorn in the Germans' side, although this time I did a much better job of keeping my air assets safe. It was a race to the finish, but I finally captured both Simferopol and Poltavka on the final turn and notched a DV. Overall, a straightforward battle that starts off with a bang and doesn't let up.

A couple of issues. For the first time in the '42 campaign the Russian AI moved out of good defensive city positions to attack weaker units, only to be slaughtered and leave said city open for easy occupation. This happened three times -- at Pravda (7,8 ), Vokmove (4,13) and Syzivka (9,14). Otherwise the AI did a credible job balancing defensive and offensive opportunities. Also, this is a bit of historical nitpicking, but IIRC the events depicted here actually took place during the '41 campaign; I think Sevastopol was under siege as 1942 began (although the Germans had to repulse a Russian counteroffensive on the Kerch Peninsula). No big deal, just curious what thoughts were behind the historic placement of this scenario.

With the end of the mission, I decided to save two versions of my last turn, one which I will take the "siege" route, and the other for taking the "assault" route. I'll play both and, depending on which one I do better in, will continue from there. (BTW, does the choice of Sevastopol missions lead to different branches, or is it only the one scenario that is different?)

Time to settle in and get ready for some besieging. :)

It is the choice between the harder and the normal path, there is no branching.

I found this one to be pretty 'easy' in the respect that my core force is too much for the quality of Red Army units present. It was not overly challenging on 'general' level.

Went for the assualt on Sevastapol...am looking forward to a good city fight!

Reading all of the feedback for this scenario:

Sounds like there are no serious issues with it, and that people are enjoying it. People (most not all) are finding it a little on the easy side, but that's the intent, as the follow up can be very tough or not so tough, depending on how successful or struggling the player's performance is.

Based on feedback, the points here that need addressing are:
None

If there's anything else important you feel I missed, let us know!

That occurred to me, but the briefing sort of explains why the situation is what it is. There's a bit in there about Soviet amphibious landing securing ground.

Reading the comments, it seems that numerous players agree the Soviets have too many outdated BT tanks, and some of them should be changed to T-34/41. I too agree with this.

I figured as much. Besides, it's hardly a deal-breaker; I enjoyed the scenario and would rather have it included to offer some action in the Crimea. Besides, as you mentioned, the Russians were on the march through the early spring of '42, so I consider this mission a matter of "tidying up" before launching the attack against Sevastopol. After all, this is a game first, not a staightforward history lesson.

(BTW, I want to mention something regarding the DLCs and historical accuracy: I just finished reading an article in World at War magazine that covered the Battle of the Buzra in Poland, 1939. As I read, I felt I was almost reliving the '39 DLC campaign: the Polish attack on the Buzra, especially at Piatek; the subsequent German attack that forced the Poles to retreat east into the Kampinoska Forest; the German assault on the Modlin fortress... talk about feeling like you've "exprienced" history! Had it not been for the PzC DLC I probably would never even have known most of these details. So, a hearty thanks for providing the DLCs... fun to play, and you learn something without even realizing it! :D )

Yup. It will still be one of the easier scenarios.

Prestige 14998 after reinforcing.

Received a PzIIIF as an SE unit for this battle, which seemed odd as far more capable tanks are available at this point.

DV turn 10

This was a constant sweep forward, the Soviet forces werent able to make a serious challenge in the fighting with there older tanks. Did expect to see naval units here from the briefing, but didn't spot any.

While this was fairly easy, I do actually like the fact the opposition is historical, it would be a shame to see all the BT/T-26 etc tanks disappear when in reality they were still being thrown into the battle by the Soviets.

I'd rather see the turn limit decreased, or add some naval units for bombardment if the difficulty needs to be tweaked.

Simferopol Redux
starting 3896
After upgrades 734
Ending prestige 772
DV on turn 13

WIth my upgrades I upgraded about half my Panzer IVs to Panzer IV G and managed to get the rest of my units that were still in Opels into more respectable transportation. This is another one that was quite easy the first time that was much more difficult. Once again, the Red Air Force gave me fits and I managed to only get a DV on the very last turn. I probably spent too much prestige on upgrading and reinforcements and as a result was unable to reinforce a couple of my units during the battle and had to take them out of commission. i am really having a lot of fun with this core, it is a totally different experience and I am optimistic that I will make a decent core out of it yet.
