1:300 scale

I have 2 large 1:300 armies made up of H&R figures, Late Imperial Roman, and Gallic. I made these a long time ago, in the old WRG 5th/6th Edition times.

At the time I went against the rules and based them in 20mm base widths, with larger scales number of figures, so in practice this amount to half-sized 15mm bases with the same number of figures. The upshot is that instead of having normal size tables with a sea of figures, I can play in a coffee table with the smaller 15mm amount of figures, allowing me to play an entire game with no need to raise my butt other than going for another beer

Economy of space and cost, and increase in comfort. I know the rules do not cover this, but as I don't really force anybody to play with me no harm is done to the community. So with my 1:300 (I play in 15mm as well) I'm going with 20mm width bases, 15mm number of figures, and UMs will be 1/2". I suppose there is no objection to this, any comments?

I will start this week playing a few solo FoG games with my tinies, as at present I'm living in a small city with no opponents nearby.

It sounds like that would work perfectly well. Nobody is going to set the thought police on you for being a bit different.

I have often considered doing 1/300th (6mm) figures on normal 15mm bases because the resulting game looks superb. As I have about 15,000 15mm figures there is rater a lot of momentum preventing me from doing that though so it will have to wait until I branch out into a different period.

Yes, it is superb.

I am looking at doing either Renaissance or Napoleonic in 6mm but on 15mm bases. I think it would look stunning.

In the meantime I'll stick to my half-sized bases in small tables. That's how I started Ancients, with Phil Barker's PSL Purple Guide in the 70s. My first army ever was a Heroic & Ros Belisarian Byzantine army because at the time that was the best value I could get for my money, as the Cataphracts cost a fortune in points what with kontos and bow, and there were a lot of them

I went into an archaeological dig in the oldest part of my wargaming library and among a few Featherstone and Charles Grant books I found that Purple Airfix Guide, just beside the Peltast and Pila rules. I'm getting old, for sure!

So, what is a Maurikian or Belisarian Byzantine? This was in the 70s, that's too much sofistication! WRG's 5th Edition had just came out and there were still hangbacks playing 3rd Edition! The book simply lists "Byzantines 575AD", with 23 compulsory Kataphraktoi (Regular B EHC, kontos, bow and darts, at 17 points) plus 27 more in the free part of the list. We're talking single figures. If I took them all up they would gobble 850 points plus 100 points for the general, and 50 spare points to splurge. I could (and did!) have an entire army with 3 Heroics and Ros figure packs!

We've come a long way since then, haven't we?
