In 863AD the Arab armies of Tarsus and Melitene invaded anatolia through the Cilician Gates. The army of Tarsus then withdrew back across the border for unknown reasons. The emir of Melitene, Omar al-Aquta (who had fought at Anzen in 838 AD) continued the raid with his 8000 men. He was confronted by the Basileus Michael III in Cappadocia with a small army (the majority of the Roman troops had been put under the command of his uncle Petronas). The Romans were not able to stop the Arabs advance, and after the battle they continued on to the Black Sea port of Amisos which they sacked. Shortly thereafter, the Arab army was surrounded and destroyed by Petronas and his much larger army at Lalakaon. Omar al-Aquta was killed in that battle, and his son would die fleeing towards the frontier.
