Autobreaks and generals

If a general is fighting in the front rank of a BG he temporarily upgrades its quality. If a general is with say a six base average BG which loses its third base does it then autobreak having lost more than 40% or does it count as a superior unit while the general is with it and not autobreak until it has lost more than 50%?

If you read the relevant section on p 55 of the rules, you will see that his only effect is to enhance their quality rerolls for "to hit" rolls.

It is not a general increase in quailty.
