Wassigny 40 DLC

Post by Longasc »

That's me at Wassigny, final turn. :)

I lost no units but ended with ZERO Prestige. I was horrible at setting up an elastic defense but stalled the French in the South and at the East map border (2 Infantry + 1 Artillery were enough for that).

I had a lot of trouble with the units spawning in the middle of the map and the sudden presence of bombers. But Char's are slow tanks and so I just made use of my superior speed to avoid combat. My self-propelled artillery had to be covered by tanks while retreating.

A very nice scenario. My units are highly experienced 3 star units already, but it came at the price of Prestige. I guess I will have to use normal reinforcements for the next scenario.

To sum up my Wassigny experience: Waah! Aaah! WTF RAIN! I can't block every river crossing! Uh what happened to my Prestige! Hm I hope the next scenario is easier.

IMO Wassigny and Arras are the most interesting scenarios of the 40 DLC. What do you think?

This was the one and only scenario i was cursing during the DLC 40 beta test. It is an extraordinary scenario, and you actually need to do some "rugby" to get the french officer to the designated zone.
This scenario is a masterpiece but a real prestige drainer :).

going back for the third try. Think I will just try for the minor victory.
Clear the battlefield and let me see

While I had Kerensky's useful AAR (I knew where they would be coming) I was still surprised by Infantry units "inside" the zone that I blocked at some key points. They were a problem, but that's something the Luftwaffe can solve.

I just played Amiens and lost a SE Tank in Bocage, thought it's open terrain! :( (-7 to a French Infantry, blargh!)
Played Dunkirk defensively, AFAIK there is a bonus unit up there in (censored).

Argh I just imagined 1944 and me scrapping my precious 3 Star Level Bombers or Stukas to gain a little prestige or something like that. xD

DLC 1941 for Xmas? Yes please! :)

*Nod* The scenario is understandably difficult, that's why the minor victory is available and not just a mandatory decisive victory. :)
As long as you avoid capturing Wassigny you should be able to achieve a minor victory, and avoid the second phase of the scenario where the massive counter-attack enters from the edges of the map.

DLC 1941 should be on schedule for release on December 5th. Date may still be moved, but that's what the product page says.
DLC 1942 will enter BETA testing immediately after DLC 1941 goes on sale (probably second week of December) and go through the 1 month testing phase before release in early January.

That's the short term plan. If we stick to this 1 DLC a month pace, we'll be done with the complete DLC campaign around April or May.

I can't reveal any information on where Africa fits into that plan, or what happens after the initial DLC Grand Campaign is complete, but we'll find out when we get there! :D

Wassigny... finished it this Saturday.
Having read the Kerensky AAR kind of spoiled it for me.
Was ready to attack the french HQ at turn 10 but waited for my units to take the rest of the cities\airfields and to reinforce, ressuply and move some of my other units to a more central map position.
If I remember correctly, took the french HQ at turn 12 and finished the scenario at turn 15.

So far, the scenario I liked most in GC40 was Sedan.

Why have you placed the artillery in the river and not behind?

A trap for the bombers, to make them attack the artillery despite the 8.8 behind them?

This the position after the AI turn.
I placed the artillery on the rivers to have enough range to destroy a french cavalry that was in the south, near the captured Somua that gave the finishing blow.
Both artillery and AA were hidden from the AI.
The french infantry unit (4-strength) wasnt there in my turn, it left the city that has one Stuka above.

Heh this scenario is becoming the Bagration of the DLCs.

Some people are frustrated by it, some people really enjoy it, and there's no doubt it's probably the most talked about single scenario of all the DLCs... so far. ;)

Although Piatek got a few mentions a while ago.

I guess that says a lot for the popularity and controversy generated by 'defensive' scenarios.

I finished Wassigny with Decisive Victory, but lost two Units.
Since I cleared all the cities in the South, I was surprised where the counterattack-units after the liberation of the general came from.
I knew there were 6 Infantry at the West of the Map, but they were too far off. There are no french cities to build units.
I replayed the situation with fog of war off, but that didn't answer my question.

How can the computer build new units without cities?

Just played Wassigny for a second time (so I knew where they would come from).

But this time, I didnt run. I stood my ground and fought.
It was the first time I ordered all ground units to be brought to full strength during a scenario (the turn in which I captured the general), some of them elite replacements (slow exp. gain on FM). Quite expensive.

It was a great battle. In turn 20 I blew up the last enemy unit on the map, but it was a real struggle to do so.
The single most usefull unit was without doubt my 88, which had a +3 initiative hero and was 3 stars at this point. For most tanks it didnt need artillery suppression, it just shot them to pieces and some understrength unit was able to finish the leftovers, when there were any...
longer, alternative "PG" like Campaign new version 0.34 from 2011.08.02 (another bugfix & now in zip format)
