Upgrading captured units

Post by pickle »

I have a question about upgrading of captured units. I apologize if these have been asked before.

First, is it intended, once an upgrade is done, to leave the original name of the captured unit (as in unit type) in effect? For example, I upgraded a captured Polish 105mm artillery unit to an improved German artillery unit. The original title remained with the German unit as secondary.

As an observation, I was wondering whether upgrades should be allowed or could be handled differently. I understand the full value of prestige is used to upgrade a captured unit to an improved Wehrmacht model yet the Germans often used captured equipment, even in a diminshed role, late into the war. It could be I just feel guilty about taking a 'free' unit and upgrading it relatively cheaply later in the campaign once it has gathered two or three stars of experience. I don't really have a solution because, if you have the prestige available, it is allowed.

I would be cool if captured units didn't take up a core slot after a certain date (when they effectively have become obsolete).

@ pickle

You may imagine that you fit the experienced crew with a new gun. The equipment is absolutely new, so you have to pay full prestige. The crew keeps it's experience gained with the captured equipment as they are still seniors in this business, hardened in the battles.

If you dont like the old name, just change it by selecting the unit and press Alt + N. Call it a sentimental memory that this unit doesn't change it's name. :)

@ Akaoz

Why do you think this would be cool? You can disband this unit for prestige or upgrade to keep the experience. I dont see a problem with the available core slots, neither in the vanilla nor in the DLC's. If you want to go for more core slots, you might want to add some yourself. Have a look at viewtopic.php?t=25990

However as DLC's seem to be pretty well balanced, I would hesitate to change that number. 8)

I think it would be cool because I could keep the units around for RP reasons. :-p

You thought about it yourself, you can still keep them as special units in reserve and upgrade them to German models when they stop being useful. Think of the Char and the Matilda, they won't be useful in 1944, to what successor do you want them to upgrade without it being quite strange.

I'd tend to agree with Akaoz, for the same reason I would, say, keep social/reward vanity items or obsolete armor sets in a MMO and stuff them in the bank - for the sheer fun of collecting things. Those captured units are a nice little reward that give character to each individual campaign, it might be a bit heartwrenching :p to disband them or upgrade them because of the limitation of the core size.

Heinz...that is a good way to think about which I failed to consider. The cadre is there but the equipment has changed.

Thank you for the tip on the name change.

my own core is about 8 slots over what I can deploy in my current DLC campaign. It gives me some choice in what I want to deploy or not. I have left some of those captured units out, especially the Matilda as it is not that great and is waaaay too slow for blitzing with. I have upgraded 1 Char B to a PZ IV myself, still shows captured Char in its title, which I am going to leave for sentimental reasons.

I always believed otherwise but i'm glad i didn't upgrade the Char1B and Mathilda II's yet for DLC 41. They proved their usefulness and absorb a russian tank attack better than any of the german counterparts models of 1941.

I am an old PG fan, and have just started playing Panzer Corp. How do you capture units? Thanks for helping me.
