Overheating problem
Hi Pip,
first of all I would like to say that you have done a great job with BA, that's the game I was always waiting for. I'm a wargamer vet, coming from the board game hex ' counter corner and see that BA is quite a nice way to play a (Advanced) Squad Leader game on the PC. Easy to get into, great presentation and enuff 'realism' that I can use my tactics from the board wargames. I bought the main game with all add ons and was happy to get into some MP as well as really enjoying the campaigns but....there's always a but...I now have blown out 40 € and can't play the game. Why is that?
Well, for whatever reason the game is causing my notebook to overheat. Usually my GPU is around 50-60 degree Celsius, my cores are about 50 degree and that doesn't change much if I play a game. But when I start BA my GPU climbs up to 90 degree in 10-15 secs and the cores are then around 85 degree, climbing. When I quit the game, temp goes down again to the normal parameters and that again quite fast in 10-15 secs. Apart from the fact that even though the gfx chip can stand up to 100 degrees, the problem of 30 degree difference in a quarter of a minute is certainly gonna kill my machine quite soon and I don't want to risk that.
My partner has a gaming desktop PC and she says her fan also goes wild when playing the game and although I don't know how the temperatures of GPU/CPU is then, her PC has naturally much more cooling than my notebook has. But I can play other games without probs and only BA is making this trouble. I have found a thread over at the matrix forum that resembles my own problem, although it's about a different game. It's also about a game that has not that high sys reqs and should run fine and several people were complaining about a 2D wargame causing extreme overheat (talking about the same gfx card/chip I have). Luckily the Matrix crew was able to fix that problem with a patch, so it was clearly the game, not the pcs of the players causing it.
See here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.as ... age=1&key=
I really hope that there's a way to help me with this because as I said, I bought all games/add ons and now sit here and can't play the thing, even had to quit a mp game with a French guy. My partner an I are running a wargaming site (http://www.homefrontcenter.de) and I wanted to play and then write an in depth review about this great little gem of a game to support it since I think many reviews give a wrong picture of it, but as the situation is now I don't want to take any risks. I can only play for short bursts so to say and then quickly have to see what the temp is (by hitting alt tab) and that's neither good for my PC nor my game (the great thing with classic turn based wargames is that you can take your time to plan). I tried another resolution (I'm using 1440x900), turned of the shadows, tried to run the game in windowed mode (which didn't work, even when I don't click the full screen option, I do have a full screen)...nothing, temp was going high quickly no matter what I tried. I so hope that you can help me...

brgs,
Andreas
first of all I would like to say that you have done a great job with BA, that's the game I was always waiting for.

Are you using the latest update (1.6.1)? That includes code to prevent the game from rendering the game as much (which makes it less smooth sometimes, but probably not noticably so). This was done specifically to slow down the rendering and help out people with laptops which might get hot.
It's worth noting that BA is actually fairly graphically intensive, but the style doesn't appear so
. So it will definitely be using a lot of your GPU bandwidth. Most video cards though are quite happy running at full speed for long periods, so you can almost certainly play without any problems. I know that WoW makes my Macbook fan go off like a lawnmower, so it's not uncommon.
Out of interest, what other games do you tend to run on the laptop?
Nonetheless, it's obviously something which is concerning you, and so I will try and think of something that might help. Would you be open to trying out some EXEs for me to help determine what it is that is pushing the video card? Actually - do you get the same results if you just sit on the main menu?
Cheers
Pip

No - the only reason that the Mac needs mipmaps is because OGL has bizarre handling of mipmapped textures (you MUST have a full set of mips, and you if you fail to include mips on a texture you ask it to use mipmaps on, rather than just using the single level, it acts as if the texture hasn't been created. Absurd.).
It wouldn't affect this issue. From the reading I have done it's probably a specific driver behaviour, hopefully I can work around it.
Cheers

Hi Pip,
thanks for the quick reply, I do have some hope now you know
Still downloading the 1.6.1 patch....will get back to you asap with the results.
Thanks a lot for helping,

Downloading right now...I didn't use it because I usually don't install beta stuff and the 1.6.0 was the latest official release so...but if it is addressing the problem, I'll install it and see what happens. Are you using the latest update
My notebook is shutting down when I play too long...and that is for preventing any damage because of the heat I suppose. Most video cards though are quite happy running at full speed for long periods, so you can almost certainly play without any problems.
Usually Vassal, Cyberboard and John Tiller/HPS games. Low spec stuff I know but I used to play Company of Heroes on this notebook and didn't have any trouble - and that game is not low specsOut of interest, what other games do you tend to run on the laptop?
Sure, I'll do (almost) anything that helps me to play this fine game!Would you be open to trying out some EXEs for me to help determine what it is that is pushing the video card?
Nope, that's fine and not causing any temp changes - neither to the GPU nor the CPU.Actually - do you get the same results if you just sit on the main menu?

Ok, I now have the new patch installed and played a bit and it seems a bit better. GPU up to 82 degree, but cores still temporarily up to 87.
Update: after now playing a MP game for 15 minutes, GPU switching between 82 and 87 degree, cores around 80...as I said, a bit better (so far not reaching 90), but...
Interesting point, my loading times are much quicker now as well!!
What else can we/I do?

Well, if you currently don't have time to see what can be done about it, I'll have to wait it seems (GPU just now is about 87 degrees again, there's no unlimited climbing as it was before, but it's still too much imho).
What about these exe runnings you mentioned? If that is in any way helpful, I'll do that - I want to play these games and that without having any concerns about the 'health' of my notebook
Thanks again,
Grim

To be honest, those kind of temps are fine for a vid card - certainly if it is working hard. As it was doing, it will shut off if it gets anywhere near too hot. I have no idea why they don't just slow themselves down, rather than overheat, but hey!
I've done some very quick tinkering (I have to get on a plane in an hour) and I have noticed that a lot of mobos now (esp in laptops) mess with the clockrate to save power - and this seems to break the internal clock that the frame limiter uses. Try downloading this EXE. You'll need to drop both files into the install folder. You will also need to make sure to run the new EXE rather than just use the shortcut.
http://www.slitherine.com/files/bbc_ba/ ... COMPAT.zip
Note this is a 1.7 EXE pretending to be 1.6.1 but it should be fine for SP games and if you are playing online with your partner. It will probably be fine playing MP in general, but I am just letting you know it is a hacked version
.
This allows you to set the framerate yourself. Just add a line
FPSLIMIT 30
where 30 can be any number, to the user.txt file in My Documents/My Games/BBCBA and it should slow down the framerate as you increase the number. Shift+Q will show you (top left) the actual frame rate. The default value is 10 FYI.
Lowering the framerate should lower the work the card is doing.
On a related note - are you running in a window or fullscreen? And if in fullscreen, have you disabled the vertical syncing on the card using some card specific control panel?
Cheers

I've had similar issues, though with my desk-top. Fan goes crazy to prevent over-heating. I've even had the whole system shut down due to heat. HOWEVER, I have the same problem with various other games, so I'm not really going to blame BBC here.
If I'm in the middle of a game, I can still tab to desktop and the fan will shut down, or slow down, despite the game is still running minimized, so I'm happy with that for now.

Ok, I put the new exe in the install folder and run it. Framerate was between 82 and 92. After setting the FPS limit to 30 as you suggested it is now around 50. Doesn't seem to change much in terms of gfx quality so that would be fine. I'll try to play a bit to see what the gfx card is doing now...
As I said I play in full screen mode because whether I check or uncheck the full screen y/n box it doesn't change anything. It's always in full screen...I thought about playing in windowed mode because some games play better in that mode, but again - I can't change it.On a related note - are you running in a window or fullscreen?
No I didn't do that. But I just tried that out and it didn't run as smoothly as before, there was a bit of micro stuttering while moving the camera and it did not change the temp of the card. So it's now back to normal (vertical sync enabled) and I'll try out the lower frame rate and get back to you with the results. And if in fullscreen, have you disabled the vertical syncing on the card using some card specific control panel?
Thanks for your time, this is great support Slitherine!
Update: I now played the Sandstorm melee scenario which took quite a bit of time and my GPU was about 72-77 degree, cores also in that temp range. Seems the beta patch, the manual framerate drop to around 50 FPS and lifting the notebook a bit with some wood tiles from the table is now resulting in me having quite an acceptable gaming situation and enjoying this game a lot

I am having a heating issue with my video card. Starting a few weeks ago, when I purchased CIV V, I started having an issue where the screen went black. Usually it would happen 2-3 times, and recover within a few minutes. Eventually however, it would just go black and when my patience was eventually exhausted, I would have to reboot.
Same issue when I tried a demo of Heroes VI. However, because I am running an NVIDIA 9500GT, I would consider that card to be at the extreme low end of what those two games support.
Now I am seeing the same thing starting over the past few days with Battle Academy (and also Panzer Corps, but that's a different forum of course
)
I wouldn't think that Battle Academy should tax my somewhat old video card greatly, however. The NVIDIA monitor (which I'm not sure is all that reliable) says I'm running at 38C when I first start my computer, and maybe 39-40 C for routine functions (email, internet, simple spreadsheets, etc). But when I run the games previously mentioned (and ONLY those games) I find the temp goes to 49-50C and that's when I get these "blackouts".
Today I read on a couple of "geek" forums that underclocking the video card might work. So that's what I've done, and tonight I ran five different PBEM's of Battle Academy without any problem. CIV V also seems to be working without crashing (although I really dumbed down the graphic options too.)
Is this a coincidence, or does underclocking really work?
EDIT: btw, I am on a desktop PC dual core 2.6 with 4 gb RAM and 32 bit version of Win 7

Chance favours the prepared mind.
Civ 5 runs worse than an RTS, despite it is just a turn-based game. Unfortunately, Firaxis did the same poor performance with Civ IV so nothing is new. I was going to suggest you play Civ V in the 2D schematic that is an option.
I've never tried to UNDERCLOCK anything, almost always people are trying to do the opposite, but that's interesting.

Thanks for the tip about the 2D mode however. If this underclocking thing doesn't work out, I'll try that.

Underclocking would make the card run cooler, for sure. Performance pretty much == heat.
I think the issue is that BA is too optimised to not use a lot of resources - it then runs at a very high framerate and thus is presenting to the screen too quickly. It's not an issue that I have seen before in other games, and it's exacerbated by the number of motherboards which now tinker with the clockrate (which messes with the timing checks to try and prevent it running too fast!).
At least it looks like we have found a solution for those small number of people who are suffering from this issue.
Cheers

Thanks Pip, it's nice to know for sure that I'm on the right track. Since underclocking, everything has been good, and I don't actually notice any degradation in performance.pipfromslitherine wrote:Underclocking would make the card run cooler, for sure. Performance pretty much == heat.
