Medals - Noob question II
Just another quick noob question: What is the exact role of medals? My current guess is that they unlock Hero slots. Is this correct, or do they provide some direct bonus as well?
Re: Medals - Noob question II
You can get heroes without any medals. But I am curious about this one myself: do medals confer any sort of advantage in the field?Benjerry wrote:Just another quick noob question: What is the exact role of medals? Medals seem to be closely linked with a unit's experience. I only started getting a couple of medals in the Low Countries, but as soon as I was in France, it almost seemed as if I couldn't have a battle without gaining medals. Seems to be around the time when units have gained 200 xp.
Razz is right. It takes 50 kills to get your first Medal. A Hero randomly appears between your 50th and 100th kill. Your next Medal is at 100 kills and you get another randomly generated Hero sometime after that. I don't know the exact breakdown after that, but it was listed here somewhere before. Maybe in the Beta Testers section? If I find the info, I'll post it.Razz1 wrote:I have never seen a hero without a medal.
I don't think it is possible.
EDIT: Found the post. Here's the link: http://slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... oes+medals
If you can't access the Beta Testers forum, here is the quote:
Rudankort wrote:Thanks for the topic. Awards and heroes are still new, so any feedback and suggestions how make them more useful, balanced and fun is welcome. Below I'll explain how they work, to make testing easier for all of you.
Awards
Awards are used to distinguish veteran units, event if they were given green replacements and lost all stars. Awards are tied to unit's kills (total enemy strength killed, i. e. inflicting 5 points of damage to enemy unit gives you 5 kills). As was in real life, many awards are "upgrades" of the previous grade of the same award, and replace it in the same award slot. There are 3 award slots, but germans use 2 atm.
Full list of awards:
Iron Cross 2nd Class (50 kills)
Iron Cross 1st Class (100 kills)
Knight's Cross (200 kills)
Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves (300 kills)
Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords (400 kills)
Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds (500 kills)
Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds (1000 kills)
Last award will probably be very rare, much like in real life.
Heroes
Heroes are similar to awards, but there are 2 important differences:
- They modify unit's stats, and so are more useful
- They appear more randomly, so you won't know in advance when exactly you will get the next hero.
First hero appears somewhere in the range of 50-100 kills, second - 100-200 kills, third - 200-500. So you can have maximum 3 heroes on a unit, but getting them can take longer than to get 3 heroes on 3 different units.
New hero gets a randomly assigned name and image. We'll try to add historical heroes in the next update. Each hero can give a certain bonus to each of the base 5 stats: attack, defense, initiative, movement and spotting. Special abilities do not exist. The reason is, special abilities are often useless or, on the contrary, unbalance the game, and we don't want any of this before release. However, in the future special abilities can well appear.
Ah I know what's going on here. Awards are tied to a nation. But in tutorial you don't play germany, you play "team red". We did this, because we did not want historical dates of equipment availability to interfere with tutorial logic. So in tutorial you don't get awards, but you still get heroes. Maybe we should have a separate set of awards for team red too.Kissaki wrote:Perhaps the rules are a bit different for the tutorials, then, because there I got two or three heroes, but not a single medal. Go figure.
Ah, I see. I don't think rewards are really necessary in the tutorial, though. After all, who got an iron cross or a purple heart for participation in excercises?Rudankort wrote:Ah I know what's going on here. Awards are tied to a nation. I ve multiple units, which have more then 200 experience, but no hero yet.
eg I ve 2 strat bombers with 380 experience each, but no hero is present.
How is that implemented?
If they get past 500 kills, wont they get any leaders or could they get 3 leaders within a few turns?
If the latter (which means I was just unlucky, but it would not be forever), does it increase the chances to get a leader if you have so much experience, or does it just activate eg the 3rd leader slot?

longer, alternative "PG" like Campaign new version 0.34 from 2011.08.02 (another bugfix & now in zip format)
Its not experience that effects heros and medals it kills. a different stat!Locarnus wrote:I ve multiple units, which have more then 200 experience, but no hero yet.

This should not be the case in released game. Can you give a link to that screenshot you found?Grunewald wrote:Servus,

Is this fixed? Or just of interest for me?
For example http://panzer-corps.com/wp-content/uplo ... nCross.jpg same here http://panzer-corps.com/wp-content/uplo ... oStats.jpg . It might not be that interesting, but it just came to my attention. Please don't think of me as a nitpickerRudankort wrote:This should not be the case in released game. As I understand, the problem is with the second guy in the first screenshot, and the first guy on the second. Both are classified as air heroes in the released version. Most likely the screenshots were made in one of late betas. I think you are the first person who reported this problem, you are very observant.Grunewald wrote: For example http://panzer-corps.com/wp-content/uplo ... nCross.jpg same here http://panzer-corps.com/wp-content/uplo ... oStats.jpg . Those are pictures of early Beta builds... when we had not divided the hero pool properly fitting their respective unit-class yet. This is done in the final game, so no Kriegsmarine Sailor is attached to a tank...

Re: Medals - Noob question II
How many kills does he have and did he have at the time of the hero award?
Re: Medals - Noob question II
you can click on picture and open full resolution to see number of kills being 10. The hero assignemed happened in previous scenario i just finished, so i think the number of kills did not change. i was inspecting units before new deployment and noticed this guy have hero icon and no cross icon.
