Two questions that came up in our game last night:
1. Do routers exert a restricted area? We couldn't see anywhere that said they don't but it didn't seem logical that they should.
2. Can unit A (cav) charge unit B (steady pike), hitting them say on the side of their second rank (and not counting as a flank charge)? B is fighting C to the front, A is not behind B's flank. P.53 says "A charge cannot be declared if it would contact only the flank or rear edge of an enemy base which is already in melee to its front, except by legal flank or rear charge" - but does this mean those elements in base to base contact only or all those able to contribute to the fight?

For your second question only those in the third rank and beyond may be charged for pike and most others as both first and second contribute dice to the melee.
Though I think we should ask Simon to rule on this as he said something completely different in Reading. And IMO was completely wrong.
But it didn't affect my games so I didn't get involved until now

Willing to be proven otherwise (as it doesn't seem logical) but there is nothing to say broken troops do not have a restricted area, so I think they do.
The second is covered in the FAQ:
"Which enemy ranks cannot be so contacted if the front base in the file is already in melee to its front?
The first two ranks."

There's a slight problem with this in that it's unsure what happens when a charge is involuntary so the charge path is rules defined, ie charging without orders or pursuit.grahambriggs wrote: "Which enemy ranks cannot be so contacted if the front base in the file is already in melee to its front?

As to part of the OPs original question, it counts as charge on the front, so you do an impact combat with all 4 ranks of pike (assuming there are 4 ranks). There's an example in the FAQ (p2, same place Graham references for first two ranks).
(FAQ is here http://www.fieldofglory.com/resources )
In the movement phase, the cavalry would conform by moving to an overlap position, is my understanding.
