Some Advice on Army Choice for Tournaments

I am looking to start work on a new project for 2011-2012, and I am thinking of doing a new army...

What I would like to know as I hear it a lot "Ohh No not that Tournament Army", I am looking to create and paint a new later army and would like people's suggestions on what to pick from.

I see these are the top 10 players on Bhgs site... So some insite to the army and amry lists would give me a much better understanding of Fog. If you know me I do like to paint weired and wonderful armies, but nothing that hit's hard. From my Authrian's to my West Coat Culture to my 300 Spartan army and my German City army's all look good, but I want more points

so any idea's!!!

Well you have a rogue's gallery listed there.

For a comp i would pick an army that has at least a few different types not a mono-culture army.
I would pick one with either speed or manuver ability as both can be interesting.
I would pick one that obviously is not easy for the typical shooty armies to take apart.
I would pick one with some drilled battle troops if you are not familiar enough with the game mechanisms.
I would pick one with troop types that tend to generate POAs. So Armoured among other things.

And I would pick areas or regions that historically interest you. Even for a tournament army you want stuff that is of interest because I would like to think you will read more about it and learn more about it as you develop it.

I would pick as few troops types as possible. The fewer there are the easier it is to use. Though it becomes prone to other single troop type armies that knock the stuffing out off it. And we all need stuffing at this time of year according to the adverts.

For you George Blood and Gold. Neither of these are proper competition armies but can certainly hold their own

Aztec. Manoeuver, elites, can pack a punch, gets around terrain, simple. Impact foot and slingers. Looks great

If not them then

Timucuan. Looks good and very different. Drilled MF Heavy Weapon, some superiors. Some Bow MF/LF for flanks. No punch but can manoeuver well and grind people down. I'm painting this soon. (Have the figures just no time)

Or did you want a proper army?

Post Latin Conquest Bzantine

They both get drilled superior knights. The French get longbow and Swiss, the PLCB get lots of LH

And of course Later Ottoman who get Jannisaries and nice foot stools

I'd suggest a good start George would be to look at what these splendid, upstanding gentlemen used in openish competitions like the BHGS Challenge and Britcon.

More limited tournaments will often lead to an army choice tailored to that tournament, so probably not so representative.
