Flocking bases

Post by Tetricus »

Hello,

I've been painting figures ofall eras for years now, but so far I've never tried to base any of them.

Could someone run through what to do to create a standard grassland-flocked base?

Apologies if this has been covered before!

Many thanks!

Here's what I do:
1. Glue the painted figures onto the base top.
2. Paint the base top (including figure bases) green.
3. Paint the base edge black (seems to accentuate the flocked base top).
4. Paint on watered down PVA (white glue).
5. Dip the base in a container of flock.
6. Use a large artists paint brush to pile up the flock on the base and tamp it into the glue.
7. Gently knock any excess flock off the base.
8. Wait overnight for the glue to thoroughly dry.
9. Use a large artists paint brush to briskly brush off excess flock, especially from figures.

To vary the base colours I sometimes use a two step approach. First I do some patches of brown flock. When that's dry I come back and complete the coverage with green flock.

Suggest you experiment until you find a technique that suits.

Another tutorial based on the same principles.

In my opinion, decorating the bases of the miniatures is a must do thing. More than 60% of the result of the miniature depends on the base.

Sorry for my late reply, that you all for the links & tips!

I'm going to go ahead and do some! I've got some French ww2 to base first, but I'll get round to doing my Romans and I'll post pics!

Thanks again!
