Newbie question on basing with a difference!

Post by Rojas »

I apologise for another question on basing however I don't believe this has been asked before. Firstly I as of yet haven't purchased the rules but am in the process of buying the lists. The reason for this is for now I wish to paint for stress relief with my ultimate aim to field 2 WOTR armies. I am going to get Perry miniatures & am aware of the amount of figures to each base etc. Finally my question is in the depth - are there any issues with basing 2 ranks per base as to the eye I think the bases look far better.

If you mean using double base depth with two ranks of figures, no, not really. You just need 2 bases per BG that are single bases so you can take casualties off, and be aware that some of your formation changes may be resricted, you couldn't for example deploy one deep or expect your opponent to put up with you saying "Well thay are one deep but I haven't got the bases so lets pretend"

Lots of people base their pikes and spear in double base depths.

In one of my armies some of the spear are based double depth and it's no problem, as I have "change" when required.

If you mean base two ranks on each base and use it to represent one base, that is going to look strange (as your formations will look too deep) and will create some rules issues, but I think they will all be detrimental to you, so you might not get complaints about it.

Also I don't know if you are new to FOG or wargaming generally, but basing figures is too ranks is actually more difficult, depending on how elaborate you want your bases to be. I assume since they are 28s you will want nicely textured bases, and you then have to apply all the basing material between the ranks of figures.

Thanks for the reply - the main reason would be for looks to be honest & i wasn't going to do it for all figures in 2 ranks as you have listed mainly units such as pike & spear. If I was to do mainly 2 rank with a selection of single would in your opinion that work. In addition I would only ever be playing my brother whose army would be compiled in exactly the same way ?

You just need 2 single bases for each battle group. Should not cause any problems then.
