FM Campaign, The "Dead" in deadtorius

Post by deadtorius »

Completed the full campaign on default level just in time as the next day the new patch was released. so its off again this time I am trying it on Field Marshall. I am beginning to think that FM actually stands for "fairly masochistic" or "forget the money (prestige)".

Belgrade started off typically ok, I bought an artillery and an extra Pioneer, worked well the first time around. This time I actually knew who the Romanian officers were so kept them out back and used them to clean up 1 or 2 step enemy that would likely just pop back to 10 next turn if i did not kill them. the only real surprise here occurred with the last city in the lower left corner of the map. The AI decided to start reinforcing it with lots of arty and AA guns as I killed off the cavalry. One of those clear a hex and occupy or some new enemy will pop up there situation. I had to concentrate all my arty and rockets within range to clear out the AA so the Stukas could get in and do their job. That one went down to the last turn. No captured units, not sure if there is supposed to be something there or not. It was hinted by one of the Devs that we had all missed something in our first round of reports.

The Yugoslav ME 109 made a brief appearance, shot up my HE 111, and was then hammered by my 88 and taken down by my ME 109's. I have to agree that historical colours and markings would be a better touch. I had been worried it might probe to be more of a problem than the Italian fighters were, but it really is not much better and can be killed easily in 1 or 2 turns.

Got a major victory and all seemed fairly much similar to the earlier campaign with the exception of the sudden mass reinforcement of the last victory hex. So far so good, unfortunately the warm feelings don't last in the DLC campaigns.

Greece.
Ok so now its off to the harder stuff as it were. I think I noticed a definite decline in prestige, I was pretty certain I had around 3000 first time around, now I only have 1111, not kidding it really was that, all those ones... unless of course my addled brain is thinking ending prestige.. whatever it was not as much as the first time around.

First time out I had some luck with a Falschirmjager that managed to capture the central airfield. So thinking what worked before should work again I bought another one. It didn't work as well the first time, so I ended up getting another one, didn't do much better so I just opted to forget them in the end. See Greece and Crete really were the death of the German Airborne. My first one got ambushed by an enemy fighter, then got popped by a ground AA to one step left. I dropped them, what else are you going to do? A cav unit popped up and finished them off for me. Still not to be too discouraged I tried another one. This one got dropped just south of the airfield, right between 2 cav units. Never saw that one till it was too late. At least they lasted 2 turns before the cav killed them. In the end I sent a Panzer to capture the airfield and kill the Cav. Just no more paras in the core army any more. One thing I was surprised by was that this time I had much more luck with the Bulgarians. Perhaps I did learn something from last time. Also a Pioneer unit can really take out that first bunker across the river, they hit it for 8 step loss. Next time though I am grabbing a bridge unit to make it easier and faster to get across the river up there.

I had about 4 turns to go when I suddenly realized that I was still 2 victory hexes short in the south, but dinner needed to be made and I logged off. When I logged back into the game I was short a Stuka, and also a para, but at least I knew when the para had disappeared, the Stuka just wasn't there anymore. I checked the buy screen, yep I had 2 open slots alright. Fortunately I had enough to purchase a new Stuka.

I was able to concentrate most of my aritllery and both Pioneers against the last 2 victory hexes and managed to pull off a major victory with 1 turns to spare.

So its off to Crete next

Crete

First real shock here was that I started with only just over 900 prestige  I thought I picked Crete Air as last time I took naval, but unless they changed the deployment or I am really losing my vision I did not notice any ground deployment areas at all. See what misplacing a Stuka does to your brain!!

It was a pleasant surprise to see the Italians provided another bomber to deal with the RN, and the cruiser was a nice touch too. I had bought a new DO117 or what ever the next step us from the JU88 is. First time I ever had one so its not locked into the old noggin yet. The RN took a fair beating from the now expanded Luftwaffe, but the RAF bomber managed to get a shot on the transport carrying the flak 88 and hit it for 9 step loss  . In general I found it much harder to get to the beaches as the tanks and armoured car moved up to attack my transports and block the beaches. I had to move my left hand force further over to the land that is on the far left, where I was able to land and then move on that airfield and victory hex. The FJ's that were holding the initial airfield had a tight fight on their hands and I really noticed how much I missed my own FJ to help reinforce it. At one point I lost the airfield just as my troops were hitting the beaches, then took it back next turn. A few of my transports took some hits from the RN but most landed intact. Once on the ground things went well on the left side of the map, not so much so on the right side though.

My right hand attack ran into some Brit infantry in the hills, and one of my grenadiers at 8 steps was attacked, and ended up surrendering since they were on the water and I guess the tank beside them occupied the only land hex so they could not retreat. Not a great start. It took 3 turns and a new unit purchase to finally get through that mess and then its off to victory hex hell in the lower right corner of the island. The clock was ticking, the Brits were deployed in depth, and things did not look good. Things did not end too well as I ran out of time still one hex out from the actual victory hex, my artillery had all fired their last rounds that turn and many of my ground units had run out of ammo, but there were just too many enemy to kill. I ended up with a minor victory.

One thing I had noticed originally in Greece but was more of a bother in Crete was that I flew a Stuka to an airfield with low ammo. Next turn it was still at low ammo. Next turn it was back to full and could fly off. Is this a bug or is it some new intentional horror to keep the Luftwaffe response time down? I have not noticed this until now so it has only occurred since the new patch was released. I think if this was intentional it will really make it harder to get your planes out where you need them when you need them. From what I have seen it seems to only be affecting the Stuka's and maybe the level bombers.. I am pretty sure I did not see the same thing with the fighters.

Can't recall the prestige going into Russia but I think its well below 2000.... makes me think I should have stayed in the happy lands of 3000 prestige on the lower levels after all...

My Stukas and planes are always refueled and ready to go the turn after they arrive at or adjacent to a friendly airfield.

The Italian Cruiser and level bomber only exist in Crete Naval.... I'm pretty sure you picked Crete Naval again. :)

I'm not 100% sure about resupply rules for air units, but I think if enemy ground units are near the airfield, or something like that, it will reduce the resupply of your stuka. Especially in bad weather, which I think still reduces supply by 50% for planes.

No bad weather in Crete and normally they are up and ready to go next turn. In this case the next turn started and they were still showing the low fuel icon.
