Stakes

Post by whitehorses »

I'm working on a Henry V army but am confused by the virtues of Stakes(PD's);

- Each Longbow BG gets Stakes up to half their Bases
- Stakes once planted, count as FF v Mounted (Except Elefante)
- Stakes do not have a Rear like normal FF's

So do Stakes affect Mounted to cause Disruption? Or do they just give Longbows a + when taking Impact?
And why are Elefante discounted from being affected by PD's? It seems unlikely that their size 20 Feet could deftly step over or between the Stakes & charge the Longbomen behind :o

No

They function exactly like FF vs mounted in close combat. Therefore they give the longbow + and cancel enemy lance POA. (Because attacking fortifications does not count as "in open terrain").
And why are Elefante discounted from being affected by PD's? It seems unlikely that their size 20 Feet could deftly step over or between the Stakes & charge the Longbomen behind :o
Because we think the elephants would uproot the stakes fairly easily.

I am not sure what you mean by this. They do, of course, have a rear. If they didn't, the longbows would not count as defending them.

Cosmic - deffo worth the investment then!

Fair enough - either that or their hide would absorb the Stakes & just trample on regardless.

I am not sure what you mean by this, nor what significance you think it has. They do, of course, have a rear. If they didn't, the longbows would not count as defending them.[/quote]

I mean that there is only a frontal Stakes & not a secondary set of Stakes behind, which I misread as the meaning of Front & Rear.
But if I've grasped it correctly, it means the front of the Stakes is counted for Shooting & CC, the rear of the Stakes must be in contact by the Longbowmen to count?

That's it and it just makes sure that you can't benenit from defenndng the stakes the wrong way around - who would ever try that one with the points towards you Ans: no-one in reality but if the rules allowed it some rule mongering would!!

SP expesinsive investment but a good investment, but they do slow down your ability to attacka nd change the cahracter of your army - as they should of course.

Yes, we have firm plans not to allow caltrops. Romans are good enough against mounted already. (Perhaps they are using caltrops  ).

To add...

we have followed a simialryl philopshy to POAs - only if "funny things" were a mjaor tactical dostrine that defined the character of a battle or army are they included. Stakes qualify due to HYW English and WWG for Hussites and barricades for Japanese or Ottomans.

Caltrops have a much less clear case.
