Escape key does not allow me to save games

Post by DukeDavid »

I recently started to play Battle Academy. The tutorial does not appear to tell players how to save games. Ploughing through the enormous amount of information in the forum I can't find how to save games. One post seems to suggest that, if you press "escape" you get a chance to save a game, but this does'nt work for me.
I do not understand why Slitherine did not provide a menu with a "Save game" option. Can anyone tell me how to save a game?

When you first start the game, there is a popup that you must click through that tells you to hit ESC at any time to bring up the load/save menu. It does seem the some people miss the text or ignore it, so we may have to add some more help, as well as an onscreen button.

What happens when you hit ESC? Are other keys operational (e.g. can you use J to toggle the minimap, or TAB to cycle through your units)? We have had reports of key issues that seem to have crept into the latest version, but they are proving very hard to track down. Are you running on the PC or Mac?

The issue should resolve itself after restarting the game. Is this the case?

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Cheers

I'm using a PC with Windows XP.
The pop up to which you refer does not appear when I first start the game - I've tried several times. Nothing happens when I hit ESC. The J key produces the minimap and TAB enables me to toggle thru my units. Why not a simple "Save game" key like the rest of the gaming world?
Another problem I've found is that when I have victoriously finished the first scenario of a campaign the game does not allow me to progress to the second scenario, so I can only play the first scenario of each campaign ! How can I overcome this?

It only appears the very first time you run - it is part of the tutorial system, once clicked through it will not show again - in the same way as the info on the force selection screen, etc.

You should be able to use the direction arrows at the bottom of the screen to navigate to and play any scenario (other than in carryover campaigns like Arnhem). Is this not possible? In any event, victory in a scenario should cause the game to take you directly to the next mission as its default, and it is strange this is not happening either.

I will investigate this further. As you seem to have a reproducable case of this very rare bug, I might try and send you an early version of what I hope is a fix.

One other thing - what version of the game are you running? (what version number shows up top left of the initial loading screen)?

I can navigate to all the scenarios but they do not usually start when I click on the appropriate tick. However saving games is my main problem at the moment. I'm using version 1.5.4 because my attempts to download 1.6.0 failed.
Look forward to receiving the fix.

Not being able to start the scenarios is a pretty strange bug. Does this apply to every campaign? It speaks to some underlying issue with the install. Does the loading crash or fail in some way, or does nothing happen at all? Is the button greyed out or functional?

Can you see whether you can successfully download the 1.6.1 beta update (which is going to be made 'official' shortly anyway I think, there are no showstoppers we have found).

Sorry you are having these odd issues - we will try and get you up and running asap.

Cheers

I have now managed to download version 1.6.0, but the ESC key does not respond when I try to save games.

Are you using a USA keyboard? Wired or wireless? Does Esc work with other programs (youtube full screen)?
You can call me junk - and type that with one hand.

Perhaps you could enable me to download the game again? This may enable my ESC key to save games.

Sorry but it is very unlikely that will help. We can try if you want but it's likely to be a waste of your time.

* Is this problem persistent, so it always fails to respond 100% of the time?
* Do you use the ESC for anything else before running or while running the game?
* Are you running in full screen or a window? What resolution do you run at? Just wondering if it could be related to windowed mode.

Can you give us your full system specs & OS just so we have it on file.

I'm just trying to build a version which will run with your install to get you to try out a fix that hopefully will solve the problem.

Pip,

I don't mean to hijack your wonderfull support :) .... but ....

Would it be easier just to add a button to the UI that performs the function of the ESC key?

Pip and Ian,

Frankly, to solve all the keyboard button problems  Why not add an entire row of buttons at the top of the UI (across the entire screen) ... or ...
... Have one button that takes you to a menu of more buttons.

I know it's "extra clicks" but remember, HOTKEYS are hotkeys ... if the hot keys don't work (for whatever reason) at least the player can perform the command.

Ever since v1.60 came out, I've never seen so many keyboard problems :? ...
It looks to me that v1.60 (stand alone) is missing all the stuff that v1.3.3 had.

I began my BA journey with v1.3.3, and I've never had upgrade problems ... (knock-on-wood) ...

We will add in a button for sure, if only to avoid the confusion if people miss the tip - although it is not that simple if we want it available in all screens - but it is obviously most critical in battle.

But I need to find out what the problem is - especially as others have said that it has affected other keyboard commands.

I don't know what you mean about missing stuff.

Cheers

Cromwell - can you please download the following file. You will need to place the EXE is contains in your installation folder. Then run the EXE directly (i.e. the game shortcut will of course point to the 'official' EXE). You will know you are running this version if there is a tiny version number in the top left of the launcher window.

http://www.slitherine.com/files/bbc_ba/ ... COMPAT.zip

Please let me know if this test version allows you to use the ESC key to access the load/save menu.

Cheers
