Year 1 of the reign of King Ashurbanipal

Our lands are surrounded by enemies. The survival of our people depends on our ability to overcome those would see our cities in ruin. To that end my reign is dedicated. May the gods grant us favor.

I have ordered the raising and equipping of more regiments. Our troops must be feed and fit for battle. To that end I have ordered the development of more farmlands.

We will need many more bricks to build with. I have also ordered this a priority, right behind food and troops.

Being displeased with the quality of the peasant troops, I have completed the construction of an infantry barracks in Nineveh to produce warriors!

Also I have dispatched diplomats to the courts of kings of the Medes and Mitanni.

Year 2 of the reign of King Ashurbanipal

The army of Nineveh is now fully staffed with the new troops. The army of Ashur is also fully staffed, but still has mostly peasant soldiers. These will replaced over the coming year.

The development of farmland continues and food is plentiful. Brick production is also up and soon Ashur will be growing in size.

We now control the river crossings near our cities. The expansion of the army has been enhanced by the construction of a skirmisher barracks in Ashur. Soon we will be ready to expand our domain!

King of Assyria

Post by honvedseg »

The Assyrians are a favorite of mine in the Grand Campaign. A quick strike with 3/4 of your initial garrison troops, even before a barracks at Nineveh is completed, can secure one of the Mittani cities and insure a solid economic base of food, brick, and copper for the fledgling empire. By the end of the first decade, I've usually taken at least 3 or 4 Mittani cities, made incursions against the Medes to obtain gems, and am busy fending off continuous wave attacks against Ashur by the relentless but ineffectual Eshunna. I group both an infantry and a skirmisher barracks in Nineveh, to take best advantage of a barracks when that option becomes available. After that, I expand toward the Mediterranean for supplies of wood, subjugating the various Syrian kingdoms along its shores, all the way to the borders of Egypt. A long trek to the south to establish an Incense gathering outpost usually guarantees access to all the needed resources within 20-30 years. Total victory takes a lot longer, but is nearly a moot point, as the surrounding empires begin to feel threatened by your very presence, but merely incur your terrible wrath in payment for their insolent attacks.

Mine too! The central position is very challenging to play as you have enemies cominat at you from all sides, often at the same time. I really like COW better than the later games in terms of content and graphics. THere are some features in the later games I wish COW had though.

Assyrians

Post by honvedseg »

Challenging? I consider it a "target-rich environment". Hehe. Why play some wimpy no-name kingdom tucked safely into a corner when you can take on the whole world at once? The Assyrians have access to an excellent selection of vital resources, mostly within easy striking distance, and a position on the edge of a large fertile plain which promotes easy defense and mutual support of a vast empire. The only thing standing in your way is the little matter of a horde of several dozen angry neighboring states, all screaming for your head...

Otherwise, you might as well play the Meshwesh, the Sherihumi, or the Hill Tribes, who can devour half the map even when run by the AI.

Year 3 of the reign of King Ashurbanipal
The tin mines at Sinjar are now in our possession at last! The green hills supporting the city ran red with the blood of the defeated Mari! Glory to Ashur!

A large force of Akkadians was slaughtered after invading our lands. It appears the King of Mari has called upon his ally to help him, but it will avail him not!

Year 4 of the reign of King Ashurbanipal

Tonight I celebrate our victory and the capture of the city of Mari!

The victory was made bitter though by the lose of many troops, but I content my self with taking my pleasure in the harem of the former ruler, who jumped to his death from the walls of his city, rather than be captured.

Our fortune rises! Glory to Ashur!

Year 5 of the reign of King Ashurbanipal

Our army has been further enlarged and now consists of a balanced force of Swordsmen, Axuillia, and Skirmishers. I strive to increase the cultivation of farmland and have the production of increse mightily!

A diplomat has been dispatched to the court of Akkad in the hopes of better elations between our kingdoms. Perhaps we can reach an greement of peacful co-existance, at least long enough for us expand to the western sea and secure a steady supply of wood!

Year 6 of the reign of King Ashurbanipal

The Kign of Akkad has answerd our diplomatic overtures by once again a large army of Akkadians to invaded the sacred lands of Ashur. We slaughtered them unmercifully! My patience with Akkad grows thin! Our diplomat in Akkadia has disappeared. How much must a king bear for his people?

Bandits from Mitanni raided the lands around Mari. All were slaughtered and their bodies impaled on stakes along the border as a sign to future brigands!

Year 7 of the reign of King Ashurbanipal

A diplomat has been sent to the Yamadhi in the hope of finding common cause against the hated Akkadians.

Our first chariots have joined the army at Mari! Our armies are made ready to strike the hated foes of our people! The time grows near for the glory of Ashur to shine like the brightest star in the heavens!

Year 8 of the reign of King Ashurbanipal

Glory to Ashur! Glory to Ashur! Glory to Ashur!

In the space of a year I have overrun the Mitanni and put an end to a great enemy of our people! The body of their kign and his soldiers lay borken and bleeding at my feet! The fate of their cities I hold in hand!

Subartu, Washukanni, Tutul, Hahum, and Carchimesh are all put under the Assyrian yoke! My sandals trod the necks of their nobles! My men have taken their women! My treasury overflows with their gold!

Truly Ashur smiles upon our people!
