What is exactly the option Random research??

It increases the random factor in the research screen making it less predictable what will happen. Most people wont care but some people like to have it one way or the other :)

Yes, with random research OFF the progress will be predictable ands steady i.e like Civilization or HOI. With Random Research ON, progress each turn will be SEMI_RANDOM i.e a small minimum progress added and then sometimes you get small and big jumps (breakthroughs). Since there is always a small progress a tech advance cannot take forever. However it will take much shorter time if you get tech breakthroughs. You get information about these breakthroughs in the Begin Turn Dialog and it is kind of cool to see "Germany got great progress in Tank Destroyers" 8)

So for example if you get a big jump in Dog Fight (dog fight is one of the air technologies) it might jump from 10% to 48% in a single turn but next turn it might just get the minimum progress like 48% -> 51%. I do not have the exact numbers here with me but it also depends on how many labs you have and how difficult a tech is to research to detrmine the minimum, small jump, big jump effect.
