Offensive or Defense?

Post by Xerkis »

Just wondering if in games like this (War Ganes); do you consider yourself more of a player that is on the offense or on the defense – or more balanced?

I’m more of a defensive player myself. My moves forward tend to be more methodical and deliberate as opposed to charging the enemy in a Blitzkrieg fashion. Securing the ground I have taken before launching another offensive strategy.

I think it depends on the game, some games you sit back defensively and you will lose. From what I have seen in this your going to have to go after flags. After that you can go on the defensive depending on how things develop or you will have to stay on the offensive. If you have a rep of quickly grabbing flags then defending, people will modify their units to force you out of your comfort zone or develop units to counter your mix. So, your really going to need to be able to play multiple styles so your not predictable.

I'm quite defensive on most games. I don't like just sitting around for the enemy to come to me though, I like to get to the front line quickly, but once there I'm usually very cautions. A lot of hit-and-run, kiting tactics and poking, trying to wear down my enemy down piece by piece while remaining at safe distance.

@ Teamgene
Agreed – it does depend on the situation. I am very much a defense player, but must try to be flexible when need be.

@ Laxen
You are a man after my own heart. That is about how I go about it. I think it would be very interesting indeed if you and I matched up against each other. It might make for a long – but good – skirmish.

To get an idea on how patient and statically defensive I can be, take a look at this. It was a plan that came together perfectly.
......... and all in defense too… With a counter attack here and there for good measure.

I would think I am a "Working the body" kind of type when I play.

I am patience in my game-play while always trying to pound my enemy's economy. I rather like punishing the enemy in small fights at many places at the same time constantly than one large push. Gaining small upper-hands in every battle tirering my enemy, I am strong when it comes to multitasking and therefor I try to force my opponent to multitask as much as possible too. Victory lies in the details!

We'll see about that! I'm also very much of a meta gamer, so don't be too sure that I'll be playing defensively in our match. I might just go for a full out rush just to surprise you ;)

Falling in to my trap already.

Well spent last couple of years playing HOI-3 where its all about offense.

As for TA, I think it will depend on the map in many situations and does it favor offensive or defensive operations, long range or short range, etc....

Very true.
On some maps they are designed in such a way that the line between defense and offense is difficult to see if even in existence at all.

(and I hope I’m not revealing too much here)

We have tried to make all playstyles viable on most maps, so that any force will be able to perform on each map :)

But of course some maps are obviously more suited for long range weapons etc, but the intention is to give also short range weapons a role on these maps in some parts of it.

Oh and just in case it was taking negatively – I meant my comment about the maps in a good way.

I think the maps allow for all forms of play. offense, defense or both – depending on the map and a lot depends on what the AI and player does.

I don't think he took it negatively, just he was stating that the team is trying to keep things balanced. So that even on a map that favor long range weapons there will be a place/purpose for short range weapons.

I believe you to be correct, but just wanted to make sure no one else might have taken it that way.
