Tweaking The Near East

Post by marmaduke »

Great game guys.
I own Chariots, Legion Gold, and Spartan. I am looking forward to your new release.

My questions are,

How do you slow down the growth rate for population in this game?

How do you slow down the initial tech jump when the scenario starts?

The AI in Spartan is quite capable and challenging in comparison to the AI in Chariots.
Is there a way to duplicate(or come close to) the AI handling of strategy and tactics in as per Spartan?

You can slow down the population growth by editng the tweaks.txt file. Search for populationa nd it shoudl be obvious what to do.

Tech jumps are controlled through the events.txt file. You can adjust the rate the change at but it might take a bit of trial and error as its a bit more complicated. I think the events.txt file is in the map directory.

The code is completely different for Spartan so there is no way to make the AI behave as it does in Spartan.

Thanks Iain for your reply.

This is what I found.

// pop gain per free worker
POPULATIONGROWTHRATE 0

// free popgrowth per turn per city
EXTRAPOPGROWTHRATE 0

My goal is to slow down the rate of growth by 25 percent.
Could you show me as an example how to acomplish this? Take your time, I know you must be busy.

The other question about tech jumps is no biggy.
The AI question is a bit disappointing. Has anyone been succesful at making the AI more of a challenge? This is my favorite period of history and I love the game system (pure genuis guys) . Its just that now that I have mastered the game I smash the AI.

You can make it tougher by just raising the amount the AI builds. I'm sure its set in the tweaks.txt file somewhere. Not really got any time to look at it until Arena is complete though.

Did not mean to imply in any way that this game is not pure 'coolness' as the two others I have played. I have played wargames for 34 years now so an AI on 95% of the games from factory are kinda easy. (I am such a grognard stud :P ) LOL

I found a way along with your suggestion to up the AI. Increase the movement rates of the armies on the strategic map and the AI adapts brand new strategies - 8) .

It also has the added benefit of being more realistic as far as movement of armies.

Keep up the good work - I am hooked on your games.
