El Condoro's DLC GC 39 Beta 2

Post by El_Condoro »

Start: Field Marshall

Poznan

3x Stuka; 2x Bf109E

1. Much better feel
2. 12/14 DV
3. Lost mountain troops :(
4. debrief: "the efforts of the Luftwaffe"
5. Stukas rule! Unless it rains, they can get to any Polish unit almost anywhere and they do great damage. They are the key to my success here.

What's the difference between FM and Colonel level? They seem the same.

Field Marshall awards less prestige I think and also slows the rate of xp gain....it also uses improved AI I think

I think you've got two right. Field Marshall slows the rate of XP and has improved AI; however, I don't think there's any difference on Prestige. I believe you need to be on Rommel difficulty to get a negative Prestige modifier. Field Marshall might give a Prestige bump for the AI, though; the AI doesn't ever seem to have a shortage.

Danzig Corridor

Post by El_Condoro »

I made that harder than it should have been, I think.

1. Lost core wehrmacht INF, (bought) core pionere and aux 38(t)
2. 13/14 DV
3. (next) Kutno briefing: should be "lead elements have" not "has"

Good fun and definitely hard with the rivers to cross. Stukas still rock!

Lodz

Post by El_Condoro »

Nearly didn't get the 3 auxiliaries out! Nearly.

1. 11/13 DV
2. No core losses
3. Briefing suggestion: put the name of the scenario in the title e.g. 16th September, 1939 - Lodz (or whatever it is)
4. Left my 2x 88 AA/ATs in reserve for this one. When the slots become available they are useful in 3 main ways:
  • a. as 3 range AA
    b. as excellent AT
    c. as a way to occupy objectives when in AT mode
Again, the fighting was intense and if I hadn't thought that the Poles may have been sneaky and kept a forward objective occupied, it may have ended differently (3 TKSs turned up on the door step on the last turn!)

Well, this one was very different second time around. First time, I could afford to attack and took Kutno and destroyed all Polish units. This time I was barely able to hold on for the DV.

1. 20/20 DV
2. 3x Stukas and an INF got Iron Crosses
3. AI ran its forces into 3 or 4 ambushes
4. Debrief: "Well done!" instead of ", well done!"
5. Lost one 38(t) due to the hubris of its commander, who insisted on going out to attack when the brief warned against it!

A much better scenario now - much more difficult and the sense of waves of attackers is much more effective. Great work.

Kampinoska Forest

Post by El_Condoro »

In forest fighting one should assume higher casualties and I got them!

1. Lost 2 cavalry
2. 14/16 DV
3. Didn't take 2 38(t)s and the 2 88s.
4. Briefing and debriefing (these have been reported before so may be corrected):
- directions do not need capitalisation. e.g. 'north' rather than 'North'
- 'troop trains' do not need capital Ts
- "besiege" rather than "siege" (the Polish capital)
5. Debrief: "surrendered, and" no need for comma

Stukas could take out a train every turn unless AA nearby. 3 trains a turn would only take 4 or 5 turns. Probably a bit easy but the potential to lose a lot of core units exists if the player is unwary. Even raising the train strengths to 7 would make a DV harder to achieve here.

Those fortresses are killers now! So they should be. :)

1. Awarded SE gebirgsjager with truck - nice extra slot
2. Lost 38(t), and a 222 A/C
3. 12/17 DV

Very tough and a real drain on my prestige. Much more effective than in beta 1.

Warsaw North

Post by El_Condoro »

Wow! What a tough slog and so frustrating. Just when the Poles are on the ropes they build another unit, another artillery emplacement springs up or they get a lucky shot on my gallant attackers. Damn, I lost a lot in that encounter, but a very challenging scenario.

1. Lost: 1x Wehrmacht, 1x SE Gebirgsjager :(, 1x 222 A/C, 1x 88mm
2. Gained: Ju87B +3 Init; Ju87B +1 Def
3. Result: 16/20 DV

I swore a during the battle - that's a sure sign of passion and engagement, right? :)

Spoils of War

Post by El_Condoro »

Amazing how much difference playing style can make. I admit I restarted this one because the first time I played far too recklessly and got smashed. This time the change was amazing - compared to at least 6 unit losses in the first attempt, there was only one loss this time, and that to a 'lucky' perfect 10 by the KV-2 on one hapless wehrmacht unit! That KV-2 later ran out of ammo and headed into Brest city - not a good move - and was dispatched summarily.

1. Got a +1 Defence hero on a Stuka
2. 14/21 DV

On to Oslo...

The gun emplacements were a problem but they fell reasonably quickly.

1. Start: 1049; 540 left after refit
2. 9/14 DV

Not very difficult but I didn't go for the 2 flags in the west of the map, which could have increased the challenge a bit.

If this is approached methodically, nothing should be a problem for the Wehrmacht on this map.

1. Start 1345; 810 after refit
2. 11/18 DV
3. No losses

There were some infantry in the northern mountains that didn't attack until it was too late - perhaps they can be made to attack a bit earlier to increase the challenge level.

Narvik

Post by El_Condoro »

Absolutely love this map! The fjords and bridges, avenues of approach etc all work really nicely. I liked the idea of sinking the Glorious, too.

1. Bought 2x Ju88s for the ship attack task - good move as they did huge amounts of damage.
2. I thought I would need to 'work the grid' to find the Glorious but it came to me. So did the Warspite but with the Ju88s it didn't last long. The most effective sea unit of the Brits was the submarine - once it planted itself in the approach to Narvik it caused a lot of damage. I wasn't forced to move Scharnhorst et al next to it but I wanted their guns for the land assaults so I did.
3. 11/18 DV

This issue with the AI bugs me - there needs to be a setting that allows an AI unit in an entrenched position to attack adjacent units but not leave its hex. The AT north of Narvik gave up a 7 entrenchment to make a weak attack on approaching infantry! Of course, it died soon after. So many times I can put some weak unit next to an entrenched AI unit, knowing it is set to Passive, to prevent it spawning new units. If it was a human player my unit would be toast but the AI just sits there and lets me do it. Of course, a justification could be the commander of those troops is taking his 'defend and don't attack' orders very literally but it weakens the AI. Thus endeth the rant. :)
